By eck folks!! I thought we had started running out of steam a bit(it had been quiet for a few days) then we get this flurry of good news! Herself is quite excited with the new episodes so do's not mind settling down to watch them with me.Not having them on dvd gives me chance to see them 'as new' so to speak so i can put the info on the calendar and make sure i catch them as and when they appear. (pity the pixie lady cant watch them as we can!)

Pixie lady i have never been to London so cannot tell you a thing about the place .We mostly holiday in Cornwall (occasionally Scotland) although we did get to Malta once! The point i wish to make is that my paper(The Mail on Sunday)did an article about a man who rents out NORAH BATTYS house for people to holiday there. He makes £25,000 a year and keeps it in the sort of order that NORAH kept it. He has often had Americans staying there and says that the visitors even enjoyed buckets on the stairs when the roof leaked once!! Added to the atmosphere.! The only problem was they did not give a contact address in the article but i assume it should be online somewhere. I hope this may be of interest to you should you decide to base yourself in HOLMFIRTH on one of your visits.

Vanishings Big Unc?? My message board said 4 from UKTV. Only 3 were present this p m . This morning a similar story. You dont suppose I brought out the gremlins by using latin when i sent our american friend a message?? I was only saying that i was in a bit of a hurry when i posted (tempus fugit....time flies!) Big unc my ancestors were Yorkshire folk in the distant past but i grew up in Notts on the border with Derbys so my ears became used to a mix of dialects. Anyroad became synonymous with the word 'anyway'(as in we'll do it anyway)so i could be barking up the wrong tree.Anyroad up thats my thought for the day so nil desperandum , tempus fugit ,arrivederci taraa.

I never liked figs since my dear departed mum 'force fed ' me one when i was about 6 or 7 years old . Herself loves them though! Going on to Jonathon Linsley and lent , LENT is a christian period when you give something up(could be chocolate whatever) to affirm your commitment.
Maybe he decided he should give up his favourite foods and then decided on the full diet.Perhaps we may hear from C F &C to confirm it, he seems to be more up on these things.

just watched FOTSW 'TALLER EXERCISES' .It could grow on me. how many did they make?i did same as you unc and looked to see the characters they would grow into. some hits some misses. all in all though , a nice change from the same round of repeats lately (the giant wood peckers next LOTSW??) LESS THAN A FORTNIGHT SINCE IT WAS ON!!!!

pixie lady SANATOGEN is /was a 'fortified wine' much drunk by wrinklies in days of yore.(second half of last century)it was a music hall joke for years.! you were not banished but'vanished' an insidious form of censorship used by ' them'. if they do not agree with something in your posting they just remove or 'vanish'it.as for it being a wrinkly get together you are as old as you feel (herself reckons i am about 12y o.as do some of the others i'll be bound )but who cares i am having fun and i get to 'talk 'to interestig people. as the uncles would say i am getting verbose again and so i had better close this 'book'

While on the marching beat did n't PETER SALLIS DO WELL ! it looked as though he was still in uniform. the others were pretty good too!my elder brother said of square bashing that you never really lost the rythm (they did that much of it).enough nostalgia already ! we shall be getting a bad name. i dont know about the WIKIPEDIA thing i will bow to your wise head.

in view of your irish republican heritage BIG UNC i wonder if you can hear what i hear when the theme tune is played like it was tonight as they all marched into the pub after foggy had been hypnotised?? in the 60's we sometimes got invited round to the local T/A hall for a bevy or two and it used to finish up with a sing song. a favourite seemed to be WILD COLONIAL BOY and tonights marching tune suddenly reminded me of it and times past(albeit at a different tempo). am i mis-remembering or maybe dreaming OR AM I LOSING IT AAARGHHH????

we were enjoying how VICAR OF DIBLEY was made when 5 mins from the end over a particular piece of info the inevitable "watch this it s on next " voice over.!!!! i've said this before you sometimes miss good dialogue, punch lines, and who dunnits with this irritating habit uktv , you have five minutes of adverts to break into for your voice overs so why not ??it can't be the money aspect from the ads because you keep getting your moneys worth from repeating the same old set of shows! please please have a thought for your viewers and let us see AND HEAR ALL the programme!

i resemble that remark, c f and c. my die hard fan days were in my youth when i could quote THE GOON SHOW verbatim. i am a fan of LOTSW and would hate to see its demise .as for tribute shows ,most of them are talk fests that tell you very little that you did not already know! i had not seen the piece about the arguing and as far as the paper report went it seemed news! i always follow this thread and assumed i was imparting something of interest to other likeminded people. so if you feel that is not being a fan that is your prerogative .

SHOCK HORROR!!!! summer wine nearly hit the buffers at the first programme.! according to PETER SALLIS on desert island discs (as reported in todays sunday express) MICHAEL BATES (somewhere to the right of MARGARET THATCHER) and BILL OWEN (somewhere to the left of LENIN)spent so long arguing after the first days filming that the producer took them both aside and said that if they could not get on he would "pack the whole lot in and go back to london". they never argued again and the rest as they say is history.

i see june whitfield in the paper this morning sayin that the BBC is ageist and she says that it only wants "in your face" young tv. she thinks LOTSW is heading for the axe but she feels it has a few more miles yet. this is due to the programme still being popular among older folk.

i wonder if thats what they meant when i posted just before xmas that they hoped to get a new trio based on russ abbot and brian murphy? not working though is it? to my mind it do's not flow yet like the old faithfuls did,and p c cooper is beginning to look old.you know what they say , policemen look younger the older you get!must add .....the outright animosity from pearl to howard is not half as funny as when he only seemed to be more sinned against than sinning,more henpecked than totally downtrodden.

talking editing friend harbottle i have been getting old LEWIS episodes on"catch up tv "for herself and have been surprised by the fact that they play it without ads and it only takes 1 hour 30 or 35mins.just shows how long the ads can last !

regarding the new series, the only character i cannot get on with is "the golf captain".just not funny enough to my way of thinking.having barry and the ex-insurance man (whatever) doing his housework just do,s not sit comfortably with past programmes.if roy clarke can still come up with oneliners like p c coopers last week there is still hope ps do,s anyone know if you can get LOTSW on i player or "catch up tv"on virgin tv??

I'd noticed that uncle and was going to comment but you beat me to the punch. further to your comments have just been on the bbc site and there is a disclaimer (dated 18 th)that the show is to cease .apparently they were to develop russ abbot and i suppose alvin and make another series.we shall see. meantime welcome David to our revolution and we hope to put pressure on the powers that be to keep the show and give us more modern episodes.

you forget folks that the BEEB is all 'cutting edge' comedy these days.(witness the rossy and russel saga)our gentle comedy "is of a bygone era".well we shall not stand for it shall we,we must petition the powers that be if that's what it takes. we shall fight them on the beaches..........

you mention my hero big unc, i think some of cleggy's one liners are brill. some of them are pertinent even today, particularly his thoughts on education.as for spotting the slips we might as well spot where the stand -ins come in , cos sometimes its not difficult.to do that though would destroy the fun of the programme.the reason i am not as upto date as you all is because i (and herself)made the decision not to buy the series on dvd because ' they are always showing them on tv'.just thought i'd put that in as cleggy would say.

talking about famine and feast,i notice that while i was in the other celtic haven (cornwall--kurnow as they say)having a belated annual battery recharge, no-one had posted for 8 days. big unc posted his beware of the name change news,and theres been a poitive deluge of postings .hooray we 're back !! i have a question for you all 'what are your areas like for charity collecting??' we had a bag delivered for filling and on it it said wednesday between 9 am and 4pm . here i sit at2-45 looking out at the usual 2 or 3 people 's bags getting wet through , no -one seems bothered to collect them.we will have to see if they call, if not the local charity shop may benefit if the things are not too wet!!

doing quite nicely at the moment having a daily tot of bushmills thanks to a fathers day present from my kids .they got me dalwhinnie for my birthday for the first time .it took a little getting used to but i soon got the taste for it. trouble is birthday and fathers day are soon exhausted then i have to buy my own

my wife and i both like cats (we've not had one of our ownsince the last one was poisoned some 10 yearsago)since i fell of a ladder some time ago my wife has done the gardening.our neighbours got a rescue cat to go with their two others a short while ago ,the other 2 were not too bad a problem but the new one is a little menace.she leaves her 'messages'any where and everywhere.the neighbours say we can spray water at her if we catch her but as soon as she sees us she 's off!the only places she will not use are where we have alliums planted (we assume its the onion smell she do's not like so intend to get more) we also get squirrel.,hedgehog and urban fox poo on our garden from time to time soare fairly used to 'clearing up'.so never say die ,you may not get rid of cat mess completely but it can be 'manageable' my wife only hates it when she forgets to wear her gloves and finds some while doing her planting.

by theway, if they do move us to uk gold (as seems likely)what will happen to this thread??will we have to start again??

i'm with you grumpy unc! most of UKTV's output these days seems to be reruns of old programmes.my other half (bless her )loves comedy shows but all we seem to get are DINNER LADIES ,MRS BUCKET(BOUQUET)AND THE EARLIER EPISODES OF LOTSW.when you are blessed with a still sharp memory it can get very tedious.herself also likes MURDER SHE WROTE AND CROSSING JORDAN ,also SUE THOMAS FBI.the last two are coming back on screen soon ,they will probably start at the beginning with those also!!o.k i know they are mostly on hallmark butyou get the picture>

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE,can you stop the continuity announcemments that occur a few minutes from the end of some programmes??? this has spoilt our enjoyment on several occasions lately by having talking over the whodunnit bits .can you stop also the 'halfscreen 'announcements .us older folk cannot always get used to it .

i must be cynical as well big unc,i had wondered if the reason was financial.as it is i have not watched the prog on drama for ages since we switched on one night and found they 'd gone back to the beginning again.!my wife said she wanted to watch something else, found SUE THOMAS F .B .EYE .on hallmark.she is now hooked on it so LOTSW.on drama has had it for now.

thats been spoiling our enjoyment for a while,lomelec. we hate it happening when the detective is going to tell someone whodunnit and the announcer chimes in over the top.then it is followed by nearly 5 minutes of trailers and adverts when the continuity man could have done his stuff!!.

please please go back to presenting 2 hour EXTREME MAKEOVER ,HOME EDITION ,as a complete programme and not split it with COLIN AND JUSTIN'S PROGRAMME.We love to see TY AND CO but to start at 10.00 pm and not see the end till 1.00am is not on,.please have a rethink on your schedules thankyou!!

please,please, please uktv style get a new 'intro'for your programmes!!the two nutters with the blue paint(or emulsion,whatever)are driving us insane. it's got so bad that we would love to see someone tip the tin over their heads!!can you not find more trailers ??(please not the girl in the yellowdress!she is nearly as irritating)the mix of programmes is good but the same thing after every ad break is setting our teeth on edge!!

you are right CLEGGSCAP, i realised you were in GOONS mode when you said you got the papers to prove it. (YOU AND ME BOTH !!!) my family think im a right loon for still liking the old comics instead of LITTLE BRITAIN etc. the thing in SUMMER WINE'S favour is that it is gentle ,a slice of life, a sideways poking of fun at us all. LITTLE BRITAIN ETC is inyour face ,deliberate and sometimes down right malicious. (thats my opinion and i am unanimous with it (as MRS SLOCOMBE would have said)so come on all you summer wine fans and raise your whiskey or whatever(mines a double with water tho, doctors orders unfortunately)and play nicely.!

well spotted cleggscap!i posted as a couple and then realised i ought to sign it as a couple .as for the two being an item ,she and henry were landlords to eccles in a couple of episodes(remember them waiting for the 4th boot to drop?they then decided that eccles must have a 1 legged friend!)enough of radio days back to summer wine . i did not realise for a while thatROY CLARKE also wrote' keeping up appearances' so as you say it must be hard for him to keep churning out the shows.but i have to say that if peter sallis takes ill (GOD forbid!!)the show really could not carry on.none of the other characters would seem to be able to carry the show on their own.in closing how about a big hand for JO TEWSON she has played the 'foil' to MRS BUCKET now she seems to be making the part of the librarian her own.

just re-read some comment from january regarding 'picture freezing and pixelations'. i have to say that it still occurs to us ,especially around 10-00pm.we are trying to resolve this with virgin but not having much luck at present.is anyone still getting it on uktv ??if no-one else is ,it must be virgin. from famouseccles in Notts

regarding picture probs---we have had twice now instances of announcers cutting in to programmes with whats on next.fine if thats all that happens but the 'next 'caption stays on screen and spoils 5 minutes of what you are watching!if this occurs too often we could end up deserting you!!! from famouseccles notts,.
