Hi to you all, i just wondered if anyone could help me. We have an open staircase and so the treds are seperate. When we moved in to the house i took all the carpet off them and for some reason the carpet had been stapled, screwed, nailed and glued, this has caused a problem as i wanted to varnish them but can't as we can't get all the underlay off. I then decided that i was going to have them carpeted but then when the carpet fitter arrived he refused to do them saying it was too much of a stressful job!! Does anyone have any ideas on how i can cover these stairs, the thought of buying new ones doesn't appeal.

Hi Ganna,

All I can say is shop around for another fitter. My Mum experienced a similar problem because she has a stair lift fitted - her first fitter just took one look at the stairs - and said I'm not doing that and left... so my Mum rang around and eventually found a person who was prepared...

The alternative would be to box the stairs in - but you would loose the look... I also think there is a product on the market which disolves underlay - but it might not be suitable for use of open stairs such as yours...

I wish you luck...

Hi Ganna

I suppose you cannot take (just) the treads out and replace them? I am thinking of my neighbour's open plan staircase where the treads are in metal brackets, but might not be practical with yours. Before that I would try a couple of glue removers on whatever is holding your underlay down (or is it just foam backing?)

Best wishes, Trisha

hi - maybe you could have pieces of carpet cut to size and edged and then just stick and tack them down. Its definitely worth enquiring. You could also ask what to use to remove the old adhesive. The House Doctor uses Carpetright so maybe they can help.
