Hi Wonder Woman,
No groundforce are probably finishing now that Alan has left the show... you will probably have to pay to have it done.
I had mine landscaped for aroung 1,500.00 and I think it was money well spent... although I do not have that sort of money now...
You could try swapping your labour and expertise on something for someone elses on gardening... or have a gardening party where you supply the food and drink and your friends the labour (and the equipment)... I have heard that these can be very sucessful - it certainly could clear your garden in an day and get it ready for inspiration.
The I would recommend that you get some source material - gardening or design mags and find out what you like and dont like, decide what you want from your garden and more importantly which area's are best suited to that and then sketch that down on a plan... split the garden into four and work on each area in turn working away from the house... - well when you are painting you dont do the whole house in one go - you split it into rooms - so you should aim to do the same with your garden...
Aim to create area's you cannot see from the house, so that you have to go and explore... if your garden is small this can be achieved by planting a large bamboo (clump forming - not running) in a stratigic place, add mystery by planting and statury, rocks and stones as well as fencing etc... so that you give the garden a flow and an energy.
But before you do anything too drastic I would take some time to actually visit some local gardens - pick up plants which do well in the neighbourhood and you like - which you can be assured will work well in your garden... and take pictures and ask questions... the best garden opening scheme is the Yellow Book - work looking out for next spring which has lists of gardens open in your area on particular days - go and look, be friendly - I have met lots of great people who share my interest in gardening... see if there are any local groups you can join - but most of all make it fun, fun, fun -
Because if you are not into gardening you can make a big mistake by making it too much like hard work to keep up with... :(
