Making a Barbecue

Making a Barbecue

One of the great pleasures in life is cooking and eating outside on a warm evening. If you are really into this you probably already have a portable barbecue. So why build one? Simply because it will always be there ready for use on the spur of a moment when the weather is suitable.

With a little careful planning you can incorporate your barbecue into a structure also forming a raised bed and seating area to make a real focal point in your garden.

Time to complete job: Half a day.
Approximate budget: £60.

You will need:

  • Charcoal tray with lipped front to retain charcoal
  • Grill
  • Bricks or other building blocks (no. of bricks approximately 130)
  • Mortar
  • Bricklaying tools
Planning:
When deciding where to put your barbecue consider the following:
- It should be unobtrusive when not in use.
- It should not be overhung by trees or other inflammable objects.
- The foundation and surrounding area should be sturdy and fireproof.
- The situation should be safe in relation to walkways/the house/and children's playing areas.
- There should be easy access from the kitchen to bring out food.
- The materials used in construction should preferably match the house and patio.
- The direction of the prevailing wind - choose a sheltered spot but not where cooking smells will annoy the neighbours.

Tip: If you are unsure whether you will get enough use out of your barbecue, build the structure on a temporary basis, just overlapping the bricks without using cement and try for a year.
