Allium Silver Spring
It must be one of the most memorable images of the year, explosions of gorgeous purple and white bobbing and dancing above the surrounding planting. Yes, if you haven't heard about allium, you must have spent the season with your head in the sand.
This relative of the onion was a favourite at big design events such as Chelsea where it has proved its worth by adding height, colour and movement to low borders. There are dozens of varieties to choose from, some with stalks that reach almost a metre tall. They are best planted out in the autumn ready for flowering the following spring, and now is the perfect time to pick up the latest varieties.
This year Somerset-based mail order flower suppliers Broadleigh Bulbs are offering a new variety of allium called Silver Spring. This stunning new drumstick allium has white flowers with dramatic deep rose centres - very different from the usual purples, silvers and whites.
Like most allium, it is ideal for the middle of a sunny border, is quite easy to grow in a light, well-drained soil in full sun and it not only looks good in the garden, it will make excellent floral decorations too.
Planted outside this autumn, Silver Spring reaches a height of about 30 inches (70 centimetres) and should begin to flower in May or June next year.
Price: £7 (3 bulbs) £20 (10 bulbs)
Available from: Broadleigh Bulbs. Tel: (01823) 286231.
