Digging the Dirt: Anne-Marie Powell
Anne-Marie's friendly face and infectious personality adorns a number of great gardening shows, including our own fantastic Garden Rivals. An accomplished presenter, she is also a respected writer and, of course, a garden design and landscaping expert. We recently caught up with the lady with the look of mischief in her eye to dig up some of her horticultural and personal loves and loathes...
UKTV Gardens: What's your favourite style of garden / garden design?
Anne-Marie: "Reclaimed messy meadow. I just like gardens that look lived in and take their lead from nature. I like using plants that are native and grow naturally in the environments they're supposed to grow in. Simple as that, really."
UKTV Gardens: What is the coolest plant or flower in the world? And why?
Anne-Marie: "Hemerocallis, or day lilies. There's so many and hundreds of colours and they just bloom forever - even though each bloom only lasts for about a day, they bloom throughout the whole summer. They associate well with so many other things too. And do you know what? You can even eat them."
UKTV Gardens: What has been your biggest gardening cock-up?
Anne-Marie: "To be honest, I haven't made all that many. One of my landscapers did once have a whole load of York Stone delivered and it ended up going through the front garden and straight into the cellar."
UKTV Gardens: Is the changeable British weather a gardener's friend or foe?
Anne-Marie: "Friend, of course. We get so much rain so it's bound to make things grow."
UKTV Gardens: Who is your gardening hero? And why?
Anne-Marie: "Thomas Church - because, as he always said, gardens are for people."
UKTV Gardens: John Steinbeck once said: "There is nothing pleasanter than spading when the ground is soft and damp." Would you agree?
Anne-Marie: "Absolutely. Nothing like soft damp earth."
UKTV Gardens: What would you be doing if you weren't doing this for a living?
Anne-Marie: "Something in music. DJing, probably. I'd like to be Jo Whiley."
UKTV Gardens: Which famous people's gardens have you worked in?
Anne-Marie: "I did Lennox Lewis's garden once."
UKTV Gardens: Alan Titchmarsh once joked his obituary would read "The Man Who Planked Britain". What will yours read?
Anne-Marie: "Wild by nature."
UKTV Gardens: Is decking chav?
Anne-Marie: "Certainly is. But that's why we love it!"

Hi Ann Marie,
Love the programme.Adore natural gardens.Have cuttings from mums hemeracallis.
I am planning a woodland edge garden in the lee of existing woodland.Having probs with how to keep local youths out, to allow hedging to establish.
However no doubt I will solve this in time.
Keep up the good work. - Something to say? Add a comment...
