Anne-Marie Powell - Live Chat Transcript
Hands-on gardening guru Anne-Marie Powell put down her gardening tools and joined UKTV Gardens for a live chat. See how she fared with your questions...
UKTV Gardens Host: Hi everyone. Anne-Marie Powell is here and is ready to start chatting! So we'll take the first question...
Stuart: What inspired you to get into gardening?
Anne-Marie: Basically I didn't have a garden myself but I got really inspired at boarding school where the grounds were fabulous. I got my first house at 21 and whilst my boyfriend did the inside of the house I did the outside and just fell in love with it!
Gardenlover: What's your own garden like?
Anne-Marie: I live on a houseboat on the Thames so most of my plants are in storage at a friend's house! At the end of November I'm moving so I'll get a garden proper.
Ally: How did you get into TV gardening?
Anne-Marie: I was working in a hotel nursery and a fax came through from the first makeover programme on TV. It was called Garden Doctors for Channel 4 and my boss applied for me because you never think you'll get on TV yourself! And that was six years ago now!
Ally: Do you grow your own produce?
Anne-Marie: I have this summer even on the boat - tomatoes, artichoke and basil. Previously I've had an allotment and the new garden we have is going to be wholly for fruit and veg. My boyfriend and I are looking to do the Good Life thing.
Ally: I never have much luck with my basil, it gets black spots and never really yields much. Any idea what I'm dong wrong?
Anne-Marie: Are you overwatering it? It needs really hot dry conditions.
Clara: What's your favourite public garden or park?
Anne-Marie: My favourite public garden is in Paris and it's the Jardin d'Atlantique - it's a roof space that's been turned into a public park. It's amazing and there are lots of pictures of it in my book Hard Landscaping In The Garden, which is available now by the way!
Greenfingers: Have you landscaped the garden of anyone famous?
Anne-Marie: Yes I have but if I tell you I'd have to shoot you! I'm not allowed to say unfortunately as I'm bound by secrecy. I can tell you that there's two - both quite big. The one I'm doing at the moment is very jungly around a swimming pool with prairie-style planting around the house. It's got a huge Acer circle in the middle of the lawn!

Do you know what, I happen to agree with you! I've thought that for a long time, I too switch over when she comes on,her voice makes my hair stand on end so I'm glad someone else thinks it too!!! Charlie Dimmock knocks her onto a cocked hat! - Something to say? Add a comment...
