Containers varied from window boxes (your standard 2/3 foot long roughly 6in width and about 10in deep) to taller ones (about 2ft tall x 1.5 ft across). Because I germinated so many seeds I was having to double up or triple up in some cases. This slightly decreased the height of the plant but nothing drastic. They look good, hence wanting to try the large sweetcorn to see if that works too. The size of the container doesn't seem to make any real difference and they have not been diseased like my tomatoes or courgettes. Perhaps the good old Edinburgh fresh air is the secret! I've discovered that although advice is that you should definitely not grow sweetcorn in containers (I think it was Mr Titchmarsh?!) my baby sweetcorn in containers worked far better than those in the ground, although those in the ground were fighting for space with sunflowers but still produced the goods. Perhaps baby corn works so next year I would like to try the big sweetcorn to see if they work in containers too.

Good news! I took the risk to find out what was in the side shoot and it paid off as I found well hidden inside a baby sweetcorn! It didnt actually say what the variety was on the seed packet, just baby sweetcorn, so based on research I'm assuming its minipop. I am having a bbq tomorrow so a few sweetcorns will be proudly displayed and served! Thanks.

Confused I stripped some leaves down but nothing there immediately below the tassels. further down the stem there are side shoots that are developing quite fast so that looks like a potential cob to me..?! The plants look fab if nothing else!

I have baby sweetcorn growing and the silks have started to turn a brownish reddish colour. Firstly, when should I harvest? Secondly (this is the stupid question), where exactly is the sweetcorn? My colleague said someone told her it grows under ground which she didn't think it did and nor do I, but having said that, I can't see (or feel) where it is growing. Is it hidden just under the silks inside the stem? I've already lost my broccoli by not harvesting it on time and letting it go to flower, so I don't want a similar thing to happen to the sweetcorn just because I wasnt on the ball harvesting it on time.

As big as Chelsea but further north. Come see me on the Barnardo's stand!
