PARMA HAM - MAKING YOUR OWN?

My husband has this thing about wanting to make his own parma ham for Christmas 2009.

He's bought a fresh pork leg, a large plastic box with lid and 2 massive bags of salt. I have trawlled the internet to check that is it just a case of covering the pork in the salt for the next 10 or so months - but to be honest this sounds too easy - has anyone does this?
