following on from the organic and supermarket debates i reckon that battery farmed barn eggs (especially ones that come in blue stirpey packs) have to be one of the most pointless, tasteless and disgusting foods that can be bought

organic free range all the way for me

We may need a big composting site for these:
Ready meals
Brake Brothers and their ilk
Oven ready roast potatoes
Food from most chain pubs/restaurants/hotels
Parsnips
air freighted food out of season

Prodigal2, I definitely agree with your line regarding "Food from most chain pubs/restaurant/hotels.

What has happened to them all. Are they all buying in from the same tasteless food producing manufacturers. Confused

"What has happened to them all. Are they all buying in from the same tasteless food producing manufacturers."

Sorry to say,yes.
I work for a hotel chain that similar to all other chains of pubs, restauarants etc. buy from one of the "Big Three" national wholesalers. A good 70% of the produce is Frozen, Chill then Heat or Ready Prepped.
In turn these suppliers buy in from the same producers across the country so it's all the same. Go into a chain pub in Cornwall and look at the menu then go into the same chain in Cumbria. Look familiar?
Chains use contracted, central buying power with a supplier to have a lever to get get rock bottom prices. Your little man does not have this and has to offset the extra cost by a better quality product.
Unless you know where you are eating the chances are "Home Made" equates to "Home Cooked", "Fresh Ingredients" equals "Delivered Yesterday in a Refridgerated Lorry" etc.
So in answer to your question, you hit the nail square on the head. Find a small, independant, family business and be nicely surprised.

I agree about bananas. Vile things!

Also, kidneys. Can't stand the smell of them frying. Truly hideous...

Hey some of us HAVE to buy frozen Yorkies as Sainsburies do a gluten free one, I have tried but not been able to make them using gluten free flour and my other ½ is a coeliac. Now I need to find dumplings, they are my only other failure cos I make everything else for him myself, including Cornish Pasties! Wink

American food products are all vile, they use any cheap garbage they can find to use as filler. American cheddar is the best example with the addition of carrot juice to colour the cheese to give the appearance of naturally aged cheddar.
Sugars and salts abound in all their foods at extremely high portions ,and yet they wonder why they are the most obese people on the planet.
Heed this advice- buy only Japanese or South Korean food products for your Asian dishes,as they are the only countries in the east that have modern quality standards.

Palm oil. Anything that contains the odious stuff. There are plenty of other substitutes but manufacturers use it because it's cheap. And every time they do, they hasten the extinction of the orangutan.

Thanks for the reply Barshedale, I had a feeling that was the case.

A relative of mine took over a pub once and I asked about their plans for the food. They had been sent leaflets and brochures from food manufacturing companies. They were seriously considering using them as the pictures of the meals looked good and the prices were competative and easy to "warm up".

So even the little places are not a safe bet anymore. Confused

Chorizo ! Loathe , hate and utterly detest the stuff !
It seems to be the latest "fad " and is appearing in everything . On the televisioin in every food programme , every food magazine . Roast beef ..add chorizo .... fish and chips .........mmm add chorizo , apple tart ...hey lets add chorizo !
I live in the home of chorizo , it gets in everything , stains everything red and the smell when it's cooking ,like dirty clothes Yuk !
Other than that ...tripe . Definately was'nt meant to be eaten . Impossible !!

I find it very funny when people talk about “chorizo” as if it is only one sausage. It’s as varied as wine.

There are over 1000 different chorizos in Spain and they are all used in different ways, from broths, to grills to sandwiches.

I have the feeling you have used the wrong chorizo for the wrong dish and probably in the wrong amounts too. If you're going to eat chorizo, check the amount of paprika and garlic used, as this is normally what can ruin the taste of a dish. Also check how old the chorizo is as age makes the taste even stronger.

Also make sure you're getting rid of as much of the fat as possible as it can come heavy on the stomach.

Now I vote for tripe... this is something that lot’s of people would vote for I think.

Honestly Burgers , I have tried loads of different kinds , used different ones , some recommended by the local butcher , and of course had many fed to me in different dishes in various restaurants , but I just really dislike all of them . Cooked , or on meat platters , uncooked , yuk
Unfortunately for me , it's really become a "now " food . Every chef seems to have to find some recipie to put it in .
I bought some pork ribs locally , and they had been cooked with it , the amount of fat that had to be drained of , it could have clogged up the arteries of the whole of Malaga province .
The worst recipie I could imagine would be tripe cooked with chorizo . And I bet some chef will cook it !!

Hi Jack, Hear what you say about Chorizo. Why not just don't have it? Job done.
As for the artery-clogging fat, todays papers say that the mediterranean diet is the best thing for diabetics, and they seem to be much healthier than us.
But what do they know?

I have eaten chorizo all my life and it is probably in the top 10 sausages of the world IMHO.

Unless it just Jack's backlash on "trendy", clearly he has a problem with paprika. While chorizo has a zillion variations, the common thread in all the variants is paprika.

A beautiful herb, paprika is such a sultry, seductive spice. And chorizo is the wonderful sausage representative! Viva chorizo!

If you don't like it, fine! Just avoid it!!
