Having just read this whole thread I can say that I undertsand what people are saying but to me the show is so dire that it can't even bring a chuckle. The total lack of charisma, energy and humour just saps the life from me every time I tune in.

BBQ you just need to look at the lighter side, that's all!! Big Grin

You know all the TV programmes that are labelled "the best of", well just imagine one put together called "the worst of" and you have a close approximation of Market Kitchen.

Honestly, they have combined the worst of all elements of a television show, from presenters, to scripting, to camera work, to the set and even many of the "tutorials" and then put them together into a single production.

It's truly an accomplishment! Develish

I guess it all has to do with your particular sense of humour.

I'm confident though that the week with Charita brought at least a grin to thousands of viewers!

It surely made many laugh!!

GFL and MK are so very different that I'm not really suprised that they seem to have attracted different types of viewers.
Personally I find MK far more informative than ever I did GFL. The fact that there are several presenters seems to ensure that you don't have just one person dominating the whole show ,also , if you don't particually like one of the presenters , then at least it does'ny spoil the whole show for you .Equally obviously , if you don't like any of them then the whole show is for you a total disaster !
What is there to dislike ? The four presenters seem to becoming more at ease with the camera and not so stiff and wooden . They have so many different chefs coming on ,people talking about wine ,and no matter what is being talked about , these people all get their opportunity to explain , educate or just give their opinion without being talked over .
I liked GFL , in that I liked the concept , which was very different from MK ,but I personally could'nt bear Jenni B , I used to cringe everytime she opened her mouth and bellowed . I really wanted to hear what the guests had to say , not her .
With a different presenter I would have enjoyed GFL so much more , but so many people really enjoyed JB's presenting as is evident from these posts .That just goes to show how different we all are , so MK proberbly appeals more to my type of person .
I still maintain that there ought to be room on UKTV Food for both , because they're not exactly flush with exciting new programmes are they ?
Come on UKTV , give us both , make us all happy !
( but if it has to be only one then keep MK and keep me happy and ... the rest !!) Wink

Jack, apart from the viewers reaction to the shows, GFL and MK are structurally not that very different in my mind. Both were "presenter and guest chef cooking up dishes and explaining along the way" shows.

The differences are merely cosmetic: out-of-their-depth celebrity names as wooden presenters, bizarre cafe backdrop with people lurking about in the background distracting us, and newstyle camera work poppong and zooming around all over the place.

Sadly, it is these cosmetic differences that grates on so many viewers.

Though, thankfully, enough see it as "so bad it's good" that it has become a form of entertainment for those. Big Grin Big Grin

I would have to agree that the concepts of MK and GFL are almost idential, it is the execution that is so different. I agree with Oyster that, in truth, the shows have identical chop-and-chat formats.

But I would agree with Jack above, there is room for both. I don't like MK one whit but I'm fine with it being on the air. Others do like it.

What I'm after is the restoration of a daily, fun, spontaneous, live food programme that brings a laugh, stimulates the salivary glands, involves the brain that is also fast paced, imaginative, varied and NOT PHONEY.

Hence, my call to bring back Great Food Live and Jeni Barnett.

Sorry peoples, big difference between Great Food Live and Market Kitchen. GFL was entertaining, fun and humorous, MK is boring, dire and dreary.

No comparison!

My, my InsideR - that summarises it in a nutshell, doesn't it!

Regardless of how awful Market Kitchen is, though, JackW makes a point..there should be room for both GFL and MK.

UKTVFood could use GFL to bring in viewers to pay for the production costs of Market Kitchen. That way everyone is happy and viewers will return to the channel!! Smile Smile

While there surely is "room for both", my guess is that production costs would exceed their ability to sell advertising. While I know subscribers are "paying" for the channel it would seem to me they'd need to get a full set of advertisers for both programs.

The problem I think is that they would have a hard time finding enough advertisers for Market Kitchen if Great Food Live were still being produced.

While MK doesn't make me laugh especially, it's good that it's fun for others!

Nope, can't say it makes me laugh. I wish it did. If this dire programme is missing anything, it's the human touch. Some light humour, a little banter between the presenters, just something PLEASE

The show just goes on and on in a dry, wooden, formulaic mode. Sometimes a minute goes by without anyone saying anything - just a chicken breast being pounded. Dreadful.

Why can't they put a bit of life into this BORING programme??

Cooking4one, lighten up!! This show has some brilliant moments, like when Tana took in a bite of Charita's chitterlings!

When I build up the "fortitude" to endure one more episode [as long as Tana is not on] I often watch it simply for the bad production values. Can't watch the whole episode but usually there is a chuckle or two in the first 20 minutes.

The mis-cues, dead silence as the presenteres each think the other should be talking, very strange edits, cameras turned onto surprised presenters, mispronunciations and awkward start-stop dialogue as the presenters try to find their place on the teleprompter all can bring a smile to anyone's face. At least MF has learnt to squint to hide his reading! Very smart.

Oh well, entertainment isn't what it used to be. Develish

Good night all!

And when the bottle of mineral water sprayed all over Tana and Matthew Fort and Charita just couldn't stop laughing !! Big Grin Big Grin The whole "cafe" was in shock.

These episodes have finally made it to Australia and I just saw this episode tonight and it was great fun. I actually watched the whole episode on and off - a change from habit.

It would seem everyone has now expressed their viewpoints on MK, one way or another.

Let's hope the powers that be take this break from programming to get it fixed so we have a show we can watch AND enjoy in the autumn.

And then maybe the laughs will be for the right reason! Fingers crossed Smile

Sorry everyone, no way does this programme even bring a chuckle much less a laugh. While I agree wholeheartedly that the show is a dreadful bomb, it is not in the category of "so bad it's funny"

It's just dreadful. Glad it's off the air for a while at least.

You vill vatch this show. You vill NEVER change channel. You vill not svitch off.
Obey, obey or ve vill get you.

Or perhaps. If you don't like it, don't watch it.
Now that's difficult isn't it.

Just reading the original comment from geordierussell way back in May it dawns on me how little has changed on how bad the program remains.

Has anyone heard when Market Kitchen will be returning? Will there be a change of presenters/format?

Certainly a change in time period is warranted.

Next series probably kicks off w/c 17th Sept as filming starts again on the 29th/30th August.

First week will be Tana and Matt presenting.

Cheers,

Thanks ::adam. It will be interesting to see what transpires in the next season of the programme. With all deference to those that love the show, some changes along the lines of those alreayd suggested would be good I think. In my mind, everything should be allowed to evolve and improve. The comment about the time that it is aired is interesting as 8PM seems like not a good time for any cooking show although it looks like people are watching the Two Fat Ladies at that time. You'd think everyone would have eaten/are eating dinner right about then Smile

Well, I too was looking forward to the new series but we're into the third week of Season 2 and no substantial chnage to this dire fare.

Even Locatelli didn't bring a spark to the show. Frown

Big Grin Big Grin This show does make me laugh. It's like slap stick comedy, really. Remember the movie from the 1950's "Plan 9 from Outer Space", where the scenes switched from day to night, the actors missed their lines and otherwise terible production? It was so very, very bad it actually has developed a cult following. It wasn't meant to be a comedy, but that's what it became. I think MK may be following in the same footsteps. Big Grin Big Grin

In all seriousness, though, could UKTVFood go back to producing quality food programmes, please. The recent experiments with Market Kitchen and Rhodes Across India are travesties.

Well Hairy Bikers have helped seal this show's reputation as a closet comedy programme. In the past you could say this show is DEFINITELY a poor attempt at comedy. There's no other explanation. But with Hairy Bikers they're upping the ante!

While I generally cringe watching this atrocious show, there ARE bright moments from time to time, especially the inane comments from Tom Parker-Bowles, although it does seem a lot of them are piped into his ear the way he reacts. Those always bring a chuckle.

And I love when the unpredictably wild camera zooms onto a presenter who wasn't expecting it. They have a stunned look like a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car.

The real problem is that the laughs are too far apart to qualify for a general comedy rating. So it fails too as a comedy production.

I still think 8PM is the wrong time for this show? I think that contributes to its poor ratings and also why it's not as "interesting" as Great Food Live. Hasn't everyone eaten dinner or at least started cooking by then?

It's like going to the supermarket hungry - everything is so much more appealing rather than if you go right after eating! Big Grin
