I just wished they'd give us a permanent holiday from this abhorrent production!

There's something inexplicably awful about this format.

All my favourites from GFL, like Ollie Smith, when they appear on Market Kitchen they don't have the same sparkle or verve they did when interacting with Jeni. Everyone's personality just seems so flat on this show....what exactly is it?

I would guess your wish is coming sooner than you may think. They are now changing what time to programme is aired. This is almost always an admission of poor ratings and is ususally the first step to cancellation of any TV show.

The 7PM slot is an improvement though for viewers [if they'd only change the content!] We'll have to see if there's an uptick of viewers over the next couple months. I would doubt it.

I was wondering what motivated the change of time for the show. Clearly not everything is living up to their expectations. Surprise, surprise.

I don't think the fundamental problem is when the programme is aired, after all it's on three times a day already.

"I was wondering what motivated the change of time for the show."

Could it be UKTV listened to the moans that it was on at the wrong time?
No not possible is it. According to some they never get anything right.

No need to be so bitter Barsh! I have said forever that 8PM was the wrong time. I don't know if any food programme can do well just at that point in the evening.

I doubt if it had anything to do with "moaning" as you put it. It is surely motivated by the dreadful viewing figures.

But the viewing figures aren't dreadful. I never understand where you get figures from to support that statement!

When viewing figures for the whole channel are up, and Market Kitchen has 1, 2 or 3 ratings over the 35k in a week, why do you say these are dreadful?

The most recent figures for Market Kitchen was for w/e 09.12.07, they have one entry that week at 57k.

Look at the same week one year before and GFL got one entry of 44K.

I don't know the relevance of the GFL figures, that show is now long gone, perhaps for that very reason.

Any way you cut it, the figures for Market Kitchen - a very expensive production - are dreadful. Week after week the show is beaten by time-worn repeats that cost UKTVFood virtually nothing to air.

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Ahh the goalposts have changed again then.

Week after week Market Kitchen is out done by repeats.

Week after week those same repeats are gaining better ratings than they did last year and the year before and the year before that.

So what exactly is relevent?

I could care less what the purported ratings are. It seems everyone is just arguing about the numbers in the Top Ten which seems pointless anyway, particulalry if the other programmes that week were crap.

To me the whole point is that it is just an AWFUL programme. It agitates, it irritates, and sometimes it bores. It is utterly an uncommendable show.

You're right, "ratings" comparisons from the BARB website are simply silly as the Market Kitchen show is simply awful.

Never has there been a more pretentious cookery programme trying to leverage the names of celebrities and offering literally zero content. Vacuous.

What could they possibly be thinking? That we are ALL idiots?? I fear, YES.

I think what I am trying to do is address the statement

"the viewing figures are dreadful"

and all the comments previously on other threads that the whole channel is sinking and that viewers were voting with their remote and changing channels.

It isn't siking at all, and for every one person who has said they are changing channels, another one or more must be switching TO UKTVFood.

People ARE watching and enjoying Market Kitchen
People ARE watching all the other programs, including all the repeats.

In fact ~ MORE people are watching the chanel than ever before.

Then again, those viewing figures do include the people who watch it everyday just to come on here and complain they don't like it, and the ones who stated they can't watch it as it is so awful, but must still be watching it to have that opinion.

I can't understand that. If I don't like something I don't watch it. No one forces me to, and as someone else said, there is an abundance of cooking programs on British TV to choose from.

Awww I'm sorry if I sound as if I am coming on strong. I don't mean to. Just wish this board would come back to life and new people wouldn't be put off by such negativities being posted all the time. Smile

I don't think the board will ever come back to the lively and fun dialogue that existed during the reign of Great Food Live.

As long as Market Kitchen casts its pall over British food programming it'll just suck the life out of any enthusiasm for UKTVFood programming.

It's effects influence the entire channel.

Smile You obviously aren't in contact with many past members of this board, via other boards or email then Bazza 12.

Even though they posted a lot during the GFL days and they also watch and appreciate Market Kitchen, they no long post due to the negativity and hositilty towards Market Kitchen and anyone who supports it and the UKTVFood channel in general.

It is the few who continue this negative campaign against Market Kitchen and the chanel who are killing this board. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Maybe, maybe not. Can't coment on how the board used to be.

But I truly think if they'd cancelled Market Kitchen it would go without a whimper, unlike Great Food Live. No one would lament its passing.

What was underestimated in my opinion was the emotional attachment GFL had amongst many viewers. Even after all this time it is missed by many and the channel won't even air repeats of the show.

In my mind it is simply bad programming. Nothing more. Nothing less.

No, you weren't posting here were you during GFL?

There are a very few in persctive who miss it.

It is the negative postings regarding Market Kitchen killing the boards.

The channel is fine and doing well.

Market Kitchen would be missed by thousands of viewers a day, fact.

This site is being killed by negative posters. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I don't think so, rosti. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and just because you disagree with others won't stop someone from posting. In fact, it will probably stimulate them to make THIER point.

Anyway, there still seems to be lots and lots of posts on the board here.

I'm with all the others on this one, I think it is the general level of programming on the channel. It's just so repetitive. It probably always was, just that with only Market Kitchen being a new daily show it just puts everything into perspective.

BRING BACK PHILLIP HARBIN AND FANNY CRADDOCK.
Everything since is just sooooooo boring. They were good middle class food snobs.

See what I mean Rosti.

The board used to have hundreds of posts in a day. It is practly dead compared with a while ago.

I simply do not see the point of saying I don't like Market Kitchen, Market Kitchen is boring, bring back GFL, bring back Jeni, over and over again, across the whole board. I've never said someone isn't entitled to their opinion, it gets very boring when that same opinion is expressed time and time again, whether I agree with it or not.

New people view, see the boring, repetitive posts and go elsewhere.

As for the general level or programming on the channel - yes it is repetitive, but more people are watching it now than ever before,

There's much to commend about the "old ways", using locally grown produce that's only available in season. And how about making the most from the war rations - that was a real skillset!!

Perhaps everything has become so "posh", especially on Market Kitchen, that it now goes over the heads of everyday people and only the most foodie of viewer is even remotely interested in watching.

I only posted once before.
I posted a nice comment about a recipe, the email I got to say there was a reply was you DibDobDeb being very curt and making me feel stupid about what recipe it was. I read the boards a lot since but never posted again.

Wow!!! Phillip Harbin & Fanny Craddock. I think we are all showing our age here!!!

I haven't thought about those names in years and years......what is your most vivid memory of them???

For me, it certainly is NOT the recipes!! Don't get me wrong - - - - Having said that, I'd adore seeing an episode or two of them just for the laughs Big Grin Big Grin

"what is your most vivid memory of them???"

Her last time on TV when she verbally destroyed a cook and with it her career.

So called "Upper Middle Class" born in Leytonstone, East London.
