Turtles

Thread Starter: Boneyapper    Started: Wed 31 Aug 2005    Replies: 27

This year was a very bad year for swimmers in Malta. Both Maltese and tourists found it difficult to enter the sea without getting stung by Jellyfish. There are swarms of them even to this day. News advised that the problem arises from too many turtles being caught for food purposes.

Question is have any of you ever tasted turtles and what ways can you cook them? I believe I heard once of turtle soup. but besides that are there any other ways of cooking them?

Hi Enz,

No we don't get UKTV Foods but on the travel channel we get many cooking programs. We also get a few in UKTV Granada.

Hi Enz, it seems to be a big problem all over the Med Sea.

The food was excellent on the holiday. It is nice to taste different foods and have it done for you.

Hi Boney just found your post. Hope the holiday went well and you had a lovely rest?

There are jellyfish in Sardinia when we went there, we could not go in the sea cause of them.

Regards to all Enz

I can see why you like that recipe Watching William!

And those links you posted were absolutely fascinating jvm1. I wonder where you buy the jellyfish, presumably at Asian supermarkets.

Boney, there are dangerous jellyfish at certain times of the year on the Queensland coast but further north than we are. We often see turtles in our rivers and I have seen huge ones on the Great Barrier Reef. I don't think sharks eat turtles, well I have never heard of it. I love turtles, they are amazing to watch. I would never eat one!

Nice one William? yes there is also a cocktial called a jellyfish and I am sure if I had included it you would have been even more convinced I was joking. Bonneyapper I am offended by your comments toward me, I am a genuine food loving person who also has humour but unfortunately I also have feelings and they were very much hurt by you post about me joking. Again unfortunately when I tried to say this yesterday I was edited and deleted, just for saying you had hurt me.
Yet you think another person is really funny for laughing at you and taking the mickey out of you which I certainly didn't.
Maybe as I tried to say yesterday, if you had done me the curtesey of actually looking at jellyfish recipes before dismissing me others would not laugh at you quite so much.

Hi Mary,

Do you have problems with Jellyfish in Australia? Turtles are seldom seen around here. You have to go far out at sea to see them.

Don't know what jvm1 is talking about. I kniow she is joking because Jellyfish just melt away when on dry land.

As you have Sharks over there are Turtles part of their diet?

Nice one jvm1. That made me laugh!

Thanks but no thanks. I will stick to fish that I am familar with. Though I can't see what can be done with jellyfish as they seem to melt once they are out of water.

I was just interested in knowing what other ways there was for cooking turtles. The soup I know of. This doesn't mean I am interested in trying them. I am rather finicky..

There are recipes for jellyfish on the internet, so there is an answer bonneyapper, start your own beachfront cafe cooking jellyfish. A good sales pitch could be for the swimmer to catch the jellyfish that stung them and get their own back by bringing it to you to cook right there in front of them. Take the sting out of the sting kind of thing.

There's a programme on Sunday night on Sky One about how turtles are near extinction... they have lived on the earth for 150 million years and now they are nearly gone. This is just so sad, I'm so embarassed to be a human being sometimes!

Hi enz, how are you. I just saw your post. I was away on holiday in the north of Italy.

Do they catch Turtles in Sardinia where the OH's family come from?

after yet another trip to Barbados where turtles are to be seen daily i personally would never entertain the idea of eating them in any way or form. They are not only hunted for their food but their shells for all sorts of horrible touristy trends. I have been privledged to see them lay their eggs , watch eggs hatch and speak with the marine biologist that tag and note these creatures for future reference, i have learnt so much about them over the last 3 years and its a sight to be in awe of, nature at its best. So i have the highest respect for these creatures that are so serene and dignified.

I think eating turtles is on the cruel side, I mean they have enough to deal with from birth, like making it to the sea without being eaten, then when they a fully grown they get caught, end up on their backs for sale in a market not a nice way to go for such a dignified creature.

Hi all.....I would never eat turtle....they are the dinosaur version of snails to me....Uugh!

I watched a documentary once about them and apparently, when the sand is dead white....we think, aaaahhhh
but it goes that colour due to turtle droppings!! (I'm sure it was turtles)

I would never ever want to eat anything that was endangered! I also think that the way they are killed is cruel too. Why do people feel the need to eat everything that moves.

I also would never eat mussels, boiling them alive is harsh.

Forgot to mention, I never ate turtle before.
I am just curious about it. Food I am not familar with like eels and snails etc. i do not eat.

I was wondering the same thing about my post Tina.
I didn't know you have to shorten each line.
Hope you have a good time in Turkey. We are leaving
on Saturday for the north of Italy for a week,
close to venice and we are also spending a day in
Slovenia. We had booked before the floods came.
Well the main thing is that you get away from
the normal rut. Have a good time. Hope you can read
this one..

i know they sting adrian as i lived there,
shame that you are infested with jellyfish, good
job i'm off to turkey for my jollies, but
seriously i wouldn't eat turtle as to me it would
be immoral, and as i can't really read your
message clearly, i don't know what you have
said, maybe you could retype it, using the
enter key before your type goes off the page
to make your message appear, like
i am doing for the moment

Yes they are endangered, you are right. I mentioned this to a friend of mine in America and they also seem to be having problems with finding turtles skeltons on beaches. Maybe it has become a popular food item, don't know. But as only the turtles eat Jellyfish we were told that in the Med especially their number is very low which is why there is an increase in Jellyfish.

As your family live here they must have told you about the problem that exists in our sea. They really sting Tina..

sorry to be a sourpuss,
but aren't turtles endangered?
