Weekend course at westminster Kingsway college

Thread Starter: Emily Howard    Started: Fri 17 Dec 2004    Replies: 38

Hi guys and girls. Last week I posted a reply on another message entitled 'eveing courses at westminster college', where a couple of people would like to get some real hands on training in the kitchen. We'll I'm a level 3 student at westminster college and a mate of Steve Walpole (good food bites & chef lecturer at Westminster college) and we're trying to arrange a course on saturday mornings for anyone interested in getting some hands on learing experience. But we'd like to see how many people would be interested in coming into the college for a few hours each week to learn basic skills and bits. The idea's are still being put to paper as I type but we think it would be a great way for ANYONE who would like to ideas for dinner parties or if your an aspiring to be a chef and would like to gain some basic skills. So it's really catering for everyones needs. So if your passionate about food post some messages on here so me and Steve can get an idea of who would be interested.

Cheers
Aaron Durrant (& Steve Walpole)

Hey Aaron

Thanks for the words of encouragement, it sounds as if its going to be a good year but a hard one, but I'm sure it will be fine though! I see your still promoting college even though your not there! Hope all is going well, I'm sure I'll see you at the graduation day back at college, thats if you can remember what I look like!

Best wishes

I don't know if you've seen it but it's hilairious and one of the characters is called emily howard and thats how it came about but feel free to call me Aaron

this course would be a grounding which would you would aquire all of the basic skills needed to progress further. As the course is structured to be around 12-16 weeks it is an amazing opportunity to learn these skills in your spare time at the weekend and at you own pace. As everyone has a different level of cooking knowledge and understanding steve is not expecting everyone to be gordon ramsays it's all about you guys and progressing at your own speeds.

hope this helps

Thanks for that - I will give him a call

I am actually more interested in a professional course, would this course lead to the students having a good working knowledge of cooking or is it very basic?

hi Claudia,
great to know your interested! AsI was involved with the project I know the scheme of work which I'll get Steve to forward to you. The course was designed as Steve had lots of people contacting him saying that they would love to broaden their knowledge about food and cookery and be able to cook like a chef at home for special dinner parties e.t.c with this information in hand Steve and Jose lecturers at the world famous Westminster College which has trained chefs for years. This would be the venue for the course so you'd be working in real industry kitchens. The basic structure of the course is that every saturday would be learning thoery and praticle skills on different food items i.e one week learning and cooking different varieties of soup and the next learning about pastry (short crust, puff, sweet, choux). All the lessons will lead up to the people who do the course cooking for 2 friends/family at Westminster college.

I hope this has been of help
if you can get to the westminsterkingsway college website you can get a phone number or email as this message board removes email addresses. when you phone or email just ask to be forward to chef lecturer Steve Walpole at the Vincent Square site.

Thanks again

Aaron

Hi all,
It's Aaron here. Firstly I'd like to say thanks to French fries for her last post and wish you all the best for your coming years at Westminster. I'm sure I'll be back from time to time especially to eat in the Brasserie and revamped Escoffier fine dining rooms for lunch, which for anyone who's never been before get down in there from mid september when they'll be fully up and running. Fantastic service, atmosphere and of course outstanding food as Steve will tell you.

And last but not least good luck to everyone going on Steve's and Jose's first cookery course I'm sure he'll be in touch in due course but anyone else interested give the college a buzz or email and you'll get forwarded to Steve.

Many thanks

Aaron

First I would like to say congratulations to Aaron for passing with distinction. As for 'the students that write on this site' comment, yes this is a good place to get ideas, tips and advice but as for getting excited? Not to sure what your getting at there.

Hi Phil

Not sure what you are getting at here. the course was very popular but due to the fact i have other comitments outside of teaching and the bosses making sure it was viable. things got delayed. The course was then likely to run into holiday seasons i.e.Easter and Summer, so that we could teach in solid blocks we chose to re-start in september. This course was desgined at a base cost so 1. it was affordable and 2. it gets people into cooking without profit. Educating people on cooking and food is why i teach and do all my outside activities its a great feeling. As for the students that write on this site they use this as a great way of getting ideas, tips and advice. they get a bit excited sometimes but they mean well. Aaron has just qualified with a distinction on his diploma course so he will be leaving us now but i am sure he will still write on here. He may come back and assist myself and Mr Souto in September. Are you just in to food or have you trained in cooking.

regards

steve

Hey Aaron
What makes you think im in the 1st year? Have you got a idea then? I thought you guys would have guessed who I am by now! Its sweet that your thinking about me! Nah just kidding!
The clue I will think about that won't give away my identity really easily.
Anyway have fun guessing for the time being! Let me know of any info you get!

Hi Guys

Right sorry for the long delay with this course. its been with the bosses for a number of weeks and only now over this easter holiday has it been all agreed. still no sponsorship so the cost is going to be around £600 for tweleve weeks. but i will be teaching and along side me will be arron. so at least all of our hard work setting up has paid off. we are arranging a date over the next week for a saturday to get all candidates in for a de brief then give the start date which should be this month, there are some spaces but only a few as the responce has been great. for those who have been waiting and already replied i will be sending a copy of the updated scheme and date this week thank you for you patience sorry but education politics are a nightmare.

regards
