What's the strangest thing you've eaten?

Watching Charita Jones make chitterlings on Market Kitchen and Tana Ramsay make very brave attempt to eat them made me think about the weirdest thing I have ever eaten. Its a toss up between giraffe jerky or horse, luckily both tasted pretty good, I think I would draw the line at the lower intestine of a pig though. Pretty offal in my opinion.

So what's the strangest thing you've ever eaten?

I've eaten sea urchin and sea slug and whilst glad I've tried them - I wouldn't want to repeat the exercise.

Hi JannyMac,

I'm very Sorry you didn't receive a response. I hope if you direct me to your question today, I can answer it satisfactorily.

We all do different jobs here on the busy web team and unfortunately the message boards sometimes don't get the attention they may deserve. Sometimes its better to contact us directly through email.

I've never heard of anyone eating sea urchin, where were you and what did it taste like!

Hi Nora

Thank you for the prompt reply. My post was on 15th June and here it is;

'UKTV Food

Your silence so far on the feedback in relation to Market Kitchen, has been deafening. Please can we have some acknowledgement that you are taking the comments from the posters on board. Additionally, some comment on planned changes or new items would not go amiss'

I just think you guys are missing a trick. It's coming up to summer hols and, given that MK is recorded in advance, a few bits of info on what's new etc.. would be useful.

regards
jan

having been vegetarian for a long time, i'm afraid to say i haven't really tried any strange or exotic delicacies, i think the most unusual thing i've eaten would probably be dragon fruit, pea aubergines or prickly pear, not very exciting eh!? Frown

Hi baboush,

Messages that are disrespectful and argumentative will be removed regardless of the subject. But if you feel that messages have been removed unfairly, do reply to the moderators message and they will take a closer look at the thread in context.

Thanks

cheese

Do you eat tofu? I keep buying it, but somehow can't overcome the thought that it'll be slimy and tasteless so I end up throwing it out.

Have you ever tried the duran (not sure of the spelling) fruit?. That's the really smelly one.

Hi Jan,

Will get back to you about what is coming up on Market Kitchen. You are right about the regular updates and previews, we need to advertise features in advance and that's what we intend to do.

We do take comments on board. The programme is new and evolving, and we are grateful for the feedback.

Back soon

although if we are just talking about strange food rather than exotic the strangest thing i've ever eaten is probably any cheese with fruit in, blegh! scary!

jan, i do eat tofu, but generally only really thinly sliced in soup, i find the texture a little disconcerting when its in big chunks, and i think it has to be quite highly flavoured (it is nice in a broth with veg stock chili, limes, ginger, spring onions soy sauce and corriander). IMHO without extra flavourings it has a distinctly health foody taste.

i have bought durian puree in a tube, but i somehow cant get past the idea of it and its still kicking about in the back of my cupboard- maybe one day!

cheese

I laughed re your post about cheese in fruit. I know what you mean!

The ones I dilike more (but have never tried - just don't like the concept) are those manufactured cheeses like 'mexcian chilli' (orange with red and green flecks) as sold by one of the large supermarket chains.

Hi Nora,

I too have had messages deleted. The moderators do not leave a message to reply to.

In fact, I felt so strongly about a particular subject (look through my posting history for an idea) I have also e-mail the UKTVFood team directly. This was several weeks ago, I have yet to receive a reply.

Oh, and the strangest thing I have eaten is 100yr eggs in singapore. Bleuch.
Regards.

I was afraid to confess that there's an organic stilton with ginger which I quite like! but peppermint and choc chip - the mind boggles Eek

What would you use durian paste for? - I'm intrigued.

Our moderators are an outsourced independent company so there really is no agenda concerning their removal of posts. They just follow the rules of the forum as they see fit. Sorry if you feel you have been treated unfairly. Sometimes they do reinstate posts after they reconsider and just remove them temporarily.

100 year old egg. Very, very impressive. What did it taste like?

The name 100year old egg is a bit missleading - it's just an egg that was pickled in horse's urine. It tasted disgusting, but I had to try it.

Yes, the moderators may be independant, but you said "...if you feel that messages have been removed unfairly, do reply to the moderators message and they will take a closer look at the thread in context". They don't leave a message to respond to.

jan, re the puree, i actually have no idea what to use it for, which is part of the reason why it lies neglected and gathering dust in the back of the cupboard.

i have to say, the ginger stilton sounds like it could be quite nice, i do quite like tintern (sp?) the semi hard cheese with onion, it comes with a waxy green coating, irresistable with digestives!

i did notice in the shops however today white stilton with apricots and chilli Eek

Nora, thanks so much for "appearing" on the website. I think why you've gotten so many queries is that you're the first UKTVFood person to come on the board since Caroline on 5 May.

There is so much pent up frustration with the content and format of this Market Kitchen programme that it's just boiling over everywhere. Angry

Mine: deep fried bees. They were actually fine...crispy and somewhat chicken-y Cheeky

Hi Nora

The issue of having posts deleted has gone too far and amounts to censorship. While you say that this is operated by an out sourced company, I strongly feel that UKTV should be concerned by their actions. This is not a forum.

Mine: A sandwich my husband made me, made with love though it was Big Grin

This really isn't strange at all but for someone who is just so unadventurous, for me it's calamari. See, I told you it wasn't strange, but I just don't have the guts to try a lot of stranger things, such as the chitterlings so it was a big deal that I at least tried it. And I didn't like it! Wink

As for the posts dbeing removed. That's happened to me too. I felt that my post was well written and whilst I was expressing negative views there was no attitude or disrespect in itat all. I only posted what I thought in a polite way. But hey, that's another matter. Smile

Thanks TV Foodie and Posset

Posset, that's very funny. What was in the sandwich?

Back to the boards issue, I know moderators are a highly experienced group of professionals in online messagebaords. They make sure that our forums adhere to our rules. There are boards where there are no rules, and they are worse off for them as they can be pretty unpleasant places to post. The moderators certainly have no adgenda concerning MK. They are there to create a pleasant environment for people to post and a culture of respect, that people with food knowledge can share tips, pass on advice and comment on UKTV Food programming be it negative or positve.

So thanks for your feedback. It's made me think we should limit Market Kitchen messages to the MK board then we are in a better position to see what messages are breaking rules and then be able to respond to any queries you have.

Nora

You mentioned in your reply yesterday that posters were in a position to challenge removals of posts with the moderators and that the moderators notify a poster when one of their posts has been removed.

I am astounded to see that my post on this thread at 12:42 yesterday and to which you replied at 12:51 yesterday has been edited with the bulk of the message removed. A further post exchange between myself and baboush 1 has also been removed. Please contact me on my email address to help me understand which parts of my posts fell foul of the rules.

jannymac..that is not an isolated incident. Many of my messages are edited or disappear altogether. Many comment on this throughout all the threads. It's been that way since Market Kitchen went to air.

Jan

Following on from your post, my post (perfectly polite and even kind towards one of the presenters) and one from Conch and Reg were deleted before my eyes this morning. Hence my post to Nora above.

Nora

I had just given birth to my son and returned home the same day. My darling husband made me a ciabatta, ham and rocket sandwich. Sounds nice eh? Only prob was he made it with part-baked bread which he hadn't baked. I ate it though, past caring at that stage Big Grin
