It's on at 6.30PM here in Australia DB andIMHO that's the wrong time for the show. Everyone is settling down and an excellent fun food programme is ideal at this time because people are thinking "DINNER!!"

8PM seems more favourable to a show like Market Kitchen because it doesn't have broad, mass appeal to viewers. It's a specialty show for the dyed-in-the-wool type. But I don't know if it's a learner programme or an expert programme the way they flip between boiling eggs and stuffing foie gras into venison livers

The whole show makes no sense to me, but tucked away at 8PM would be FAR better than 6.30!! Angry

IMHO the airing of this show at 8PM is one of the reasons it has such horrible ratings. While not a fan of this boring show, I don't know if an 8PM cooking show has ever got great viewership really.

I know it's shown again at lunchtime the next day but for some reason that timeslot hasn't got a good viewership either even though it was GFL's best timeslot normally.

If they were to change the time the programme aired I think they'd get at least slightly better viewership figures.

After nine months watching this programme in complete bewilderment, I finally have figured it out!!! We've all "been had"!

Market Kitchen is a parody of food programmes!

It came to me as a flash reading these posts about foie gras overdoses, chervil root, then that hideous rattlesnake episode and now this discussion about eating your neighbourhood squirrel population to save the red squirrels.

It's all a joke on us!!!

They've proven we're just a bunch of dumbos ready to watch anything and they've been laughing at us all along! Now I'm angry.

But as a parody of everything else currently on food TV, it's actually quite good, isn't it? THAT makes me laugh!

A revelation!! An epiphany!!

Schmaltz, you've worked it out! Market Kitchen is actually a comedy programme - subtly executed indeed - but oh so funny as a parody of the deadening repeats they feed us during the rest of the day! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

I shall now watch it in an entirely new light Smile

You seem to have cracked the plot schmaltz1

But why didn't they have Matt Lucas and David Walliams present the show?

We could have seen Marjorie Dawes giving advice on low fat eating - HALF a rattlesnake portion equals HALF the calories!

Plus, two Fat Ladyeeeeeeees on a country bike ride cooking up a picnic of local, seasonal, and ethical food in cow pat strewn field.

Andy would have been great in the audience participation shots: 'would you like some squirrel and chips Andy?' ... "I want that one!" ... then of course once cooked and served ... "I don't like it!"

As soon as backs were turned he might have jumped up and took over presentation of the show while demonstrating his own master-class on bangers and mash!

Vicki Pollard could have been on another table with her mates, and when asked what she thought of the food might say something like: "OMG I can't believe you just said that cos its summat like wot we gets for school dinnars since that Jamie Oliver stuck his oar in and anyway I saw Tana cooking on a primus behind the bike sheds in the market with that camera man wot drools and dribbles and goes all wobbly ... oooooooh MY god it's sooooooo disgusting! … git off!"

"Is there any more?"

I've always said that a change of presenters could make all the difference to MK, and I feel sure that Matt and David would turn the show into a worldwide success.

Very funny gastro!! Big Grin Big Grin

But I was thinking almost farce level, like a Monty Python's Flying Circus doing the show. Too obvious, perhaps?

Oh the power, the POWER, just cos three of us spoke out, (an neither of the other two particulary liked Market Kitchen to start with) the whole chanel changed, GFL was axed and Market Kitchen was created for us.

That really is indeed power!

Just so no-one else thinks I am completely mad, I was replying to a post that was removed due to it's rather strong content, not only about Market Kitchen, but toward myself and two other members of this board, intimating that this whole change of programming was our fault!

Hope that explains.

I know!! Big Grin Big Grin

When I read your post last night and saw what had happened I was really laughing, it just looked so strange, but also funny.

I did reply to you, GFLForever, but I think because I "named names" in my reply both my and your posts disappeared. I am sooooo glad you drew my attention to it. Thank you. Lovely that we both got such a good laugh out of it.

Ahoy "queenslander"!! I'm a New South Welshman! I and a couple friends do miss Jeni and Great Food Live too! There was nothing quite like that programme, was there? We all have problems "warming" to Market Kitchen.
But I think Jeni has moved on to radio for the time being but you can hear her on the internet, I tune in once in a while. She's as witty and urbane as ever!
