and you know why?

because after giving it more than a few weeks, it's still rubbish.

If only there was a foodie program with a presenter that had a personality and could hold there own, whilst giving the audience a giggle now and then...

Nostalgia. It ain't what it used to be.

Geordie, your post made ME laugh. But I must agree. When we have the fortitude to endure one more episode we often sit there and chuckle at the mis-cues, mispronunciations and awkward dialogue as the presenters try to find their place on the teleprompter. Entertainment ain't what it used to be. Sigh.

Maybe Market Kitchen could be rescued by locating it somewhere different and having Jeni Barnett as the presenter? Just a thought. Nothing against the other presenters, it's just a terrible programme.

Why not replace Tana with Rachel Allen. I know she can have an annoying smile but she is a good presenter, she has good recipes and she does not stand with her thumbs in her trouser pockets.

Well, never let it be said that I will never try anything before giving an opinion. I have now 'tried' Market Kitchen on a number of ocassions over the few weeks that it's been on (mostly in desperation because there's nothing else on!) and I can finally conclude, without any shadow of a doubt that this programme is completely and utterly awful!! It's about as charismatic and inspirational as a packet of proecessed ham and the presenters about as interesting as a bowl of porridge! Bring back Jenni and co - I miss that programme so much!

I wonder what all you guys out there have replaced GFL with? Knitting, playing the piano, going to bed early or maybe you could recommend another programme thats on at 10pm that could replace this hole in my televisual evening? Answers on a postcard please......

Dustyfrg I think your posts are being deleted? I could swear you had some like the veg steamer story that I can't find anymore.... anyway I'm with you on BrightIdeas. About the only way to get our daily "fix" now isn't it??

Yes 'fraid so. It was a good funny post too! (Although I say it myself) the funny thing was someone had replied to it, but it was nowhere to be seen. What I don't understand is that it wasn't being nasty about anyone (like some on here are). And there have been a few more deleted, but you know what it's like, the more someone tells you not to do a thing you feel a kind of compulsion to do it. Must be the rebellious sixties child in me..... Tongue

As for GFL I'm now madly looking on UKBI for all these chefs who can't stand JB, so far I can't see any sign of it. I'll let you know if I come across it.

Big Grin Well I happen to like the show and the presenters. If you find things so bad you can always turn over. The presenters and chefs are great and I enjoy looking at the recipes shown. Keep up the good work...

I think what they are trying to say in this thread is that the programme is so bad that it's actually watchable - just for the laughs. Sort of like what made "Plan 9 from Outer Space" so memorable.

That's my take Moniver as to why they aren't "switching it over". Develish

I'm never sad if I miss MK ... probably usually sadder if I catch it! I have tried to enjoy it but simply can't. Have I missed something? Is this really from a cafe in Borough Market? There's not a snip of reality about it. I can't understand why it has been called Market Kitchen. Only breath of fresh air have been the two Irish chefs this week - Rachael and Clodagh.

Sorry peeps, I still find this programme most unmemorable ... so there is still a gaping gap where GFL used to be :(

This thread is for those who want to watch MK, hate it, only laugh at it then come here to post about it and take the michael?

That is sad, pathetic and very perverted.

Switch over and save everyone your misery.

Perverted Eek

...well that's a bit of a stretch JJ3. There are actually a lot of programmes on TV that have played to this concept of "so bad it is good". Many movies with a cult following [Barbarella comes to mind] are in this category. There's no reason a cooking show can't too!

Let people who enjoy Market Kitchen - no matter what the reason - have their little pleasures. A good chuckle does everyone a bit of good! Big Grin

Its really strange that the only people on this thread (i.e. Moniver and JJ3) who actually like MK (or so they say) are recent posters, never posted before!!

Hi PB

I've not posted on this thread before but have done so on a number of other ones. Like JJ and moniker, I too, like MK. Now, I don't think it's perfect and believe that there is work still to be done to refine and adjust it, but I really think that there is potential. One comment from many people, and with which I absolutely agree, is the fact that in the main, MK is is a bit 'worthy' and lacks fun. If they can get that right - and I think it's only a matter of time, once everyone relaxes, the spark will arrive. Let's wait and see.......

Smile

All IMHO

best wishes to all

I hadn't posted on this thread because I am fed up with Market Kitchen taking up half the site with so many threads going.

But I like it too as to lots of others scattered around but not being as prolific as the anti brigade.

MK makes me laugh too but in a good way. I for one would hate to see MK become just another formatted cooking programme with a presenter becoming the focus, which is what the majority of you seem to want, why? I get the message its no GFL for you but I wouldn't want it to be. Granted I only caught a few of the end episodes but couldn't watch them all through- didn't seem to be too much cooking going on- chefs never seemed to be allowed to explain what they were doing.
MK is a more natural informal type with the focus being on chefs and recipes and non-professional presenters linking not taking over. I like it when they cook something as it's not cheffy and gives us lesser mortals hope. As for it being in one particular market wouldn't most people realise that they can get the produce from their own local markets and this is just an example of what produce is out there and to use them more, like the piece they did last week about regenerating other markets north and south.
I've always had to cook but I've never before tried a TV recipe but this show has involved me and thats got to be a good thing. Members of the public are involved and are used rather than looking like 'rabbits caught in headlights', I'm particularly thinking of a James Martin programme. Thats what MK has done for me, I'm looking at other progs and comparing and yes some are good but different usually celeb chefs or profi presenters.
I've never joined an online 'discussion' before but obviously I feel quite strongly about this prog. weird!
Anyway it'll be interesting to see how Tana gets on with Matthew this week but I hope if it doesn't work MF and TPB will get back together as I do enjoy their stints better.

Sadly I didn't get any feedback. But if you remember I was looking for them to reply ref the suggestions and critique of Market Kitchen. It's a pity, I had hoped that they would respond to us.

Jan...my apologies you are absolutely right.

As I was typing the message yesterday I had an inkling I got it wrong. The two issues are probably intertwined in the politics of programming I would guess.

But it IS very disappointing that no response ever came, even it were to be a "politically correct" statement. I would think there would be a higher level of respect to the folk that bother to enter the boards and post their comments?

Easy mistake to make! Smile

I am disappointed - not least because I've tried to remain positive about Market Kitchen and have been prepared to give it a chance. Hey-ho....

Not being that familiar with Good Food Live, except for my earlier observations about the viewer feedback, I don't feel I can add anything that hasn't already been said.

But as for Market Kitchen which I usually do watch the first few minutes, I would add my agreement to jannymac when she says it "lacks fun"

To me a cookery show MUST have an element of fun or some form of humour. When we commission a commercial, it is usually assumed the best form of humour is some type of self-depricating dialogue of some type. This brings the talent down to an equal level with the audience.

However, I get the feeling that this is asking too much from the class of presenters that have been chosen, though.

The only solution in my mind would therefore be to invite more voluble, extroverted chefs to balance out and eclipse the rather dreary presenters currently on offer.

At the end of the day [sorry], it boils down to respecting AND INVOLVING the audience to get that high level of involvement in the program that it is VERY clear Good Food Live had. This can only be done if the viewer enjoys and feels part of the programme.

MkyGuru, I agree entirely with your analysis but the other comments that your prescription to fix Market Kitchen is to make it GFL is also correct.

Not a surprise, though. The suggestions you make are completely logical and this, essentially, describes WHY Great Food Live was such an excellent cookery show for so many viewers.

I hope that those in a position to take some action are reading this thread. As was said earlier, this is a goldmine of great suggestions.
