Cheeker - I have e-mailed UKTV to find out what is happening as no-one seems to know. Haven't had a reply yet, don't suppose I'll get one, although I only did it yesterday. If I get a reply I will post the result on the messageboard.

We are all as shocked as you!!! Confused

Just received an e-mail from UKTV and its true GFL is being axed in April and a new show The Market Kitchen is replacing it although they did not say who the presenters are going to be but it will not include Jeni. I think we should all switch off. But maybe we should give the new show a try first, you never know it might be OK. Sorry guys to give you the bad news, but this is definitely true. You will see that the show "The Market Kitchen" will be presented by Simon Rimmer, Clarissa Dickson Wright and Tara Ramsay, and filmed from Borough Market.

All they are doing is trying a fresh approach. At the moment every show on TV is a studio based format with guests.

I can see what they are trying to do by bringing the show out of the studio and into the market.

If you look at the way Cookery TV shows are at the moment, it is all about the Chefs. The food is almost an afterthought.

I suspect they want this show to be about the Producers, Produce and the Final Dish.

If you look at what the likes of ITV and BBC are doing, they are just rehashed formats jumping on the Celeb Chef bandwagon. Neither of those Saturday programmes are about the food, they are about the Chefs.

You only need to read the BBC message boards with them swooning over james martin to see that.

I am sad that GFL is departing from out screens, & will be devistated if Jeni goes too Frown Is there any chance that this new GFL Extra will stay? I have really enjoyed the more detailed master-class type items on stock etc this week. It has been good also to have Jeni aound for an extra 30 mins.
When the new market programme comes akong is there any chance this 30 min show could stay please Big Grin

I'M DEVASTED TO SEE GFL GO!! WHICH PROBABLY EXPLAINS WHY, SINCE THEIR RETURN AFTER XMAS, THE STYLE HAS NOT BEEN SO GOOD - LOTS OF PRERECORDED STUFF, NOT AS MUCH LIVE INTERACTION AS BEFORE. WE WILL MISS JENI, THE CHEFS, GUESTS AND WHOLE TEAM OF GFL. THE NEW SHOW WILL HAVE A LOT TO LIVE UP TO - I WILL RESERVE JUDGEMENT UNTIL I HAVE SEEN IT.

I HOPE THEY GIVE JENI AND CREW A HUGE PARTY - ON AIR SO WE CAN ALL JOIN IN!!

Have you noticed how flat the show is with other presenters when Jenny is off, I watch GFL because of Jenny, recipes I can get out of books. She is enthusiastic, irritating, knowledgable, sarcastic, humourous, engaging, forceful, hilarious and makes a fairly dull talk-recipe format into a sparking hour in my day. I am sad, but UKTVFood will loose at least one faithful viewer when the show goes.

Very disappointed to find out GFL is going, will give up watching UKTVFood altogether when GFL finishes. Does anyone know what Jenni will be doing next?

I cannot help but wonder if GFL has been a slight victim of it's own success. A few years back, when - for me - it was at its best the show sparkled with Jeni & the likes of Gino D'C., James Martin, Mike Robinson & simon Rimmer I note these names (did not deliberatley leave out Michel Lemoine & Brian 'he nig man' turner etc) as they have all gone off to make their own shows, practically leaving GFL.
I am forced to wonder if this (with, no doubt, great increases in their respective fees) has contributed to the demise of GFL Cry
I remember the crys here when Bites was replaced with the not so hot Food Uncut. As there seems to be space for a 30 min show please, PLEASE could we keep GFX? please Smile

Oh come on people, be realistic. The new show is 90 minutes, fully replacing GFL and GFLE, and the decision to can the shows will have been taken a long time ago. Keeping the crew, Jeni, etc on for the sake of 25 minutes of telly, just because a few people complained, isn't very likely is it?

Sorry to kill the dream but you gotta MOVE ON, people. There's nothing to see here.

Agree with Sock. Like it or not, it's history and all the bleating by, 20 posters on here,at the most. Ain't gonna change anything. How many times do you have to read the same message before it sinks in. This is its last run and then confined in the archives. Don't do repeats as too much is time, date sensitive.

Anyone considered it may have been Jeni who had enough and it was her choice not to renew that caused the demise. After all it was the posters on here who kept on bleating that no one can replace our Jeni, if she goes I won't watch the show, without her it's nothing. Well thanks what we've got. Nothing!!
Let's move foreward and at least give the new show a chance. How on earth can you rubbish something that won't even be aired for weeks yet.

Don't forget but we will probally never know. 50/50 chance Jeni had enough and wanted a change of job. Yes, job. How she earns her living, cash in the purse and if a "knitting" show pays more, why not?

The fact that Jeni presents GFL is purely co-incidental. Jeni is a presenter/entertainer and it doesn't matter what type of show she compered it would reflect her personality. Without her GFL is a fairly ordinary, compendium cookery show like many others and something new needs to come along and hopefully, in the shape of "The Market Kitchen", it will.

I just hope that they will have a main presenter who isn't a chef. What really annoys me is when they replace Jenni with a chef who then insists on asking questions which they obviously know.

It can come across really false and most of them just end up answering there own question anyway.

I have it on EXCEPTIONALLY good authority that Jeni isn't the driving force behind the show going. No, this is entirely the doing of the UKTV head honchos that took over last year, and who naturally wanted to make their mark and shake things up.

Wow, SockPuppet...are you sure you're not Jeni in disguise...you seem to have all the inside track. It seems like it's the same the whole world over...new managers want to introduce new projects/programmes/strategies so their bosses think they're doing their jobs properly. Plus ca change, huh?

I will give the new programme a go as I gave Food Uncut a go. But from the bits I have read about, it all sounds a bit Londonyfied to me. That was one of the things that annoyed me about Food Uncut. I am not really interested in which is the latest 'in' resturant for the hip young things who live in the capital. Nor am I going to be interested in the stall the sells the artisan bread that is just to die for! I might be interested if other areas of the country got a look in too. I may be prejudging this new programme too harshly. But Food Uncut and its best Cornish Pasty in London is still fresh in my mind.

I reported in another earlier thread about why GFL is going - the production team behind GFL has had a big fall out with UKTV and it also is linked to Saturday Kitchen moving to ITV (same people or something). It is nothing to do with Jeni she is simply an employee who will be out of work!! And i am devastated too this show has seen me personally through some very dark times and I love it. Tana Ramsey will be wonderful I'm sure...................... Develish Eek Frown Confused

Prospect made Saturday Kitchen for the BBC, then ITV paid them vast amounts of cash to make the same show for them instead - and so the BBC got vbery angry. As they have a share in UKTV, it could be related but if you ask me this show has been slowly losing its spark since they were forced to turn the studio white, ditched the guest presenter and started making Food Uncut as well. I suspect new bosses at UKTV wanting to 'shake things up'.

the new show is going to be set above Borough Market and the lovely Simon Rimmer is to be a regular host I believe. I do love Jeni but am well up for giving Mr Rimmer a chance!

I don't want to repeat anything that's gone before. All I can say is that it's very sad that a successful format (content and presenter) will be sacrificed simply because someone has fallen out with the production company. Who will suffer? Well, yet again it will be us, the viewers. Do the new UKtv bosses care? I've not seen any comment from them on here responding to viewers' posts.

Having met Simon Rimmer, I know he's a nice guy so I'll give the new show a chance, but he's not Jeni. I've enthused about Jeni on another thread, so I'm not going to repeat myself. Like lots of others, I'll miss her.
