Hi, I posted on here last year for ideas for what to cook for Christmas dinner for my family and had a great response, so I'm hoping you can help again this year

My mum is vegetarian and she is coming for dinner. I don't want to cook something seperate for her, I would rather we all ate the same thing. "We" are myself, my meat loving husband, and my 3 children aged 4, 2 and 9 months.

Anyone got any ideas for a meal that has traditional Christmas flavours, is substantial enough for my meat loving husband, and is suitable for young children (so no raw eggs, nuts etc)?

Last year someone suggested Mushroom Wellington and this was a great success, but I need a new idea!

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions...

hey! just signed up to get some ideas as well. I normally do a traditional dinner but replace the turkey with quorn roast or nut roast or a filo pastry.

Sorry, I also meant to add, often at Christmas I have had the quorn roast with home made sage and onion stuffing and that is nice too, in fact last year, I have that and the nut roast - it all got eaten eventually - especially the next day with the bubble and squeak!!

Thanks for the ideas! I'll have to have a look at Olive, the pumpkin and sage pies sound yummy. The only problem with nut roast is the ages of the children I'm cooking for, though if they were finely ground I could give it to the 2 older ones and make something different for the baby. I try to make everyone the same thing though, whether it be veggie or meat, as I believe kids should experience lots of different tastes and also learn that the are expected to eat what the adults do!

Del 27 - I'm here to confess that I suggested Mushroom Wellington last year and said I would dig out the recipe, and then couldn't find it - I'm so sorry! I did find it about a month ago though ....
My personal recommendation (as a veggie) would be Delia's Parsnip & Sage roulade. Absolutely gorgeous, though you may wish to leave out the toasted hazlenuts on the top for the little ones. It's in the Delia Christmas book and on the website I suppose. Hope you enjoy the meal whatever you have.

I've just tried Celia Brooks Brown's Mrs Myrtleberry's Roast and it was delicious - the nuts in that have to be very finely ground. It sliced well and will be tasty cold and it is lighter than traditional nut roasts. I will definitely be making it for Christmas because it has a lovely rich flavour. [I had to use raw peanuts and cashews plus sunflower and sesame seeds because of my daughter's allergy.]
