Mmmm, I know what you mean here. I must admit I am no way a fan of Gary, but I did feel sorry for him on Friday. His menu was totally British and I well remembered the problem with the "Souffle".
How does Passion Fruit, Chocolate and Pistachio Ice cream represent the South East I wonder? He was a very nice bloke but British South East Cooking???? I wonder.

I think it is a total shame that when we British are proud of our traditional cuisine and we dont include indian, chinese etc we are classed as racist ect ect. It is as sad state of affairs when it comes to this. The french are proud of there cuisine as are the spanish, italians ect. So why shouldnt we be allowed

Well Iam fed up with this obcession of A British Dish, how long does food have to be before it is classed as British, Hannah Glasse a 18th century Delia had curry recipes written down Clarissa Dickson-Wright is recreating her recipes on BBC 4 10th June to 7th July and I am told Mrs Beeton had curry recipes, our food has naturally been international since the Romans arrived.

All different cuisines have certain influences, but there is a lot of food that is traditionally British and should be celebrated. It is attitudes like yours that will eliminate British cuisine totally, I love a curry and chinese have done 20 years or so but still doesnt make it British...........SORRY

I totally agree with everyone.....The whole point of the programme was to show off british talent and british ingredients so although we all love foreign food - at the end of the day it is foreign and not British............ Angry

Does anyone you know grow Cardamon or Birds eye chilies in their back yard? If it has to be British, it has to be able to grow in the various regions of the country! Big Grin Surely then, no chef can be said to have cooked a truly British dish so far, it would be impossible to take it back to the days before importing, and the queen would be served a REALLY plain (if nourishing) meal. Wink

Well they have already said NO PORK as so not to upset the muslims, so what about beef and hindus, meat and vegetarians ect. To be honest should never of been called Great British menu.
Would dearly of loved to have heard Brian Turners views today.

Great to see Bryn the only non-head chef come out top in the main course tonight and also very pleased for Nick Nairn too who I think the others failed to fear!! they both seem genuine and they both cooked beautiful dishes -well deserved

I know I would love to have had Richards starter and I think Bryns fish and main was fantastic showed so much guts and he went with what he believed in. And it would have to be followed by Marcus Warings egg custard seen although gary Rhodes desert no longer in.

I thinks its a disgrace personally, I think Atols food looked fab and seems a very clever chef would love to eat his food, but this is GREAT BRITISH MENU, well it was certainly not anymore.

I think that you are wrong about the beef. This was cooked by Tom Lewis'
Roast sirloin of Perthshire Highland beef with Ayrshire potatoes and roasted asparagus.

Of course ther was beef.

Well I am glad to see that Ireland, England and Scotland made it into the final menu. Indian, Chinese and italian are all great but they do not qualify as British .....Hope the Queen and her guests enjoy the meal after all the blood sweat and trears that went into the compitition. Big Grin Smile

Hmmm,I just had a thought on this, although initially I agree about British food & British chefs, does anyone have any views on the fact that over the years we have become a multi-cultural country,so does it not follow that the food is continually adapting to accomodate the population change?

I enjoyed this series, I agree with the fact that Indian food should not have been included. I was over the moon when the winners were IRISH, WELSH, SCOTTISH and ENGLISH. I'm Scottish and proud of it! Well done the Celts!

Spangled....I heartily agree with you, in such a multicultural, and long mixed society, what could really be described as 'British'? The Korma IS a British dish, although the spices would have to be imported. When I first started watching the programme, I thought that the food would have to all be sourced locally, but there have been episodes where the chefs have used spices and 'extra's' that are in NO WAY native to our soil or localities. The biggest trouble comes, when trying to think of an exiting 'British Dish' to not give in to the sway of the supermarkets and little shops where all the foreign ingredients are easily available and could be bought. This is what happens though as society evolves. I think they would have been better off if the title of the show was different. I did like the look of the roast beef that tom done last week though, made my mouth water. I was pleased to be proven wrong about the beef Develish

If you look at Atols recipes then look at the other chefs it is plain to see the huge difference that Atols was not even close to being British

I see what people are saying about Atols recipes, and India was once apart of the british empire, and i understand that was his roots of cooking, im just unsure. BUT- i would of liked his to of won his fish dish so Bryn could do that amazing lamb it was so much better looking than Nicks venison. even though Marcus's custard tart looked amazing i would of liked Micheal to win the dessert not out of sympathy but i thought it looked a stunning dessert and it was more genertically british rather than one region, which i know it was a regional competion but it was a dessert that summed up the whole of eating british.
