I love christmas and even despite the skinny gravies, the dreaded sprouts , the christmas pud that hits you in the boots (never have it at christmas but get loads in the sales and fry it in butter and booze for a barbie pud!!) soapy instant stuffing, cheap plonk and of course not forgetting the daft hats!! the only thing that I can think of to put in room 101 is the sports on boxing day Big Grin Big Grin well if the ball was made of that ghastly cheap chocolate it would be food

Please put Turkey into room 101 as it is yet another boring dull and tasteless American import.

I agree with AbyC and Karen15, Christmas is amazing and not a time to banish lovely food into Room 101 especially not turkey. The turkey I have on Christmas day is always lovely, I love Christmas dinner it is my favourite meal... pigs in blankets, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, stuffing, roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots, peas, brocolli, roast parsnips, creamy mash and I always have yorkshire puds, plus lots of lovely thick gravy. This would be my last meal I love it that much.

Just thought of something else - bananas in general I loathe, but bananas in trifle WHY! It is disgusting.

Big Grin Wink Got it 100% right Essex Girl, it is all about memories and exactly Dickens style.
Past, your memories.
Present, your memories recounted and new ones created.
Future, your kids repeating the cycle.

May your entities be with you and all other board members at this time of year

I can think of a few things I would like to ban but have decided not to. All I would be doing is getting rid of memories. The box of dates, that nobody ate, except Dad. My Uncle who every year delivered the fresh free range turkey. The mince pies that mum made and every year someone reminds me that mine are no way as short as hers were. Christmas puddings that Granma made. All these things make Christmas what it is. I'm sure as my children grow older they will look back on their past christmas's and say "do you remember when" just as I do. Smile

Has to be shop bought mince pies - no one can beat mum's. Also shop bought christmas cake and pudding. Mum's puds are so light they go well with everything else, though we do usually have a short break before pud. Big Grin

My pet hate, not just at Christmas but anytime during the winter, is Jerusalem Artichokes Eek Eek

As a dutiful daughter I do buy them for my father but they are horrible and the after effects mean they are called fartichokes in our family.

I'd like to banish Champagne to Room 101. A lot of it is just overpriced plonk.

Whats's wrong with a good English sparkling wine like Camel Valley Brut or the wonderful Nyetimber.

I would ban those awful turkey 'joint' things that some supermarkets sell. They are usually cylindrical in shape (nothing like a real turkey!), are no doubt pumped full of artificial additives and are pre-basted and stuffed with sausagemeat. Not only do they taste foul they also take all the fun out of Christmas dinner.

I would ban too small party hats in crackers and I would definately ban those disgusting little 99p bags of tree chocolate things that taste of lard. But mostly I would ban anything that interferes with the sumptious perfection of the glorious sprout, they needeth not partake of sesame nor almond, 'cos they are perfect just the way they are!

But I do big it up for the xmas pud, it is stoggy and horrible but only if you buy it from the supermarket, make your own and it's a delight - and the recipes usually make so much you have enough for two maybe three puds, so extra pressies too, hurrah.

I would put christmas cake into room 101 especially if made with rock hard royal icing. I have made on nearly every year for twenty years and most of the time we are too full to cut into it and it can still be there for my birthday in February!

hmmm, what to ban, I can't ban brussle sprouts, my family love the darned things, apparently espescially the way i do them, which there response when i said they could make them themselves.
can't ban all the horrid little sicky sweets, fake liquers in chocolate and weird fake fruit slices, again there would be a general outcry on the day, I can't ban humbug type folk, as although I'd like to take a cheese grater to them they're not actually food.
I think I'll have to go with brandy sauce, it looks and smells like posset and makes my stomach churn, as well as my fathers chesnut stuffing which he always insisted on doing with his beautifully prepared goose, and the smell would always put me off, not all chesnut stuffing, just his.
oh and that £2 a bottle perry my neighbours make us have a glass of every year, even when we get them the decent stuff for xmas every year, maybe they're trying to tell me something?
ooh ooh, another one, my x mother in law's strange pink blamange thing which she used to make me a special bowl of because there was an almond in it for luck and I had a nut allergy, lovely thought, but it was grim, apparently it's a danish thing.
darn it all, I'm the xmas pixie, I didn't think I disliked anything about the season till I read this thread.

Candied Peel! I can't stand the stuff, never use it. I love the spices that flavour Christmas cakes, stollen and mince pies but all is ruined when peel is added. I like fresh peel and even the bits in marmalade but Candied Peel is disgusting. We just get Christmas over and Lo and Behold it's hidden in Hot X buns.
Merry Christmas to all.
