Hi,

In two weeks time, I am throwing a dinner party for my father's birthday. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to cook, as my father and my uncle both have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This alone would be ok, but my father is also lactose intolerant. It isn't going to be very formal, just a sort of soiree type gathering. Any helps would be greatly appreciated. Smile

Hi Kirsty, It all depends on what their intolerance is. I have very mild IBS, which means I cannot have loads of carbs (especially late at night). I would suggest something like a seafood salad to start (with optional dressing & bread), followed by lemon & garlic roast chicken peices that everyone can help themselves to, with sides of meditteranean roast vegetables (made with sweet potato instead of potato), jacket potatoes, and a wonderful tomato. onion and olive salad dressed with olive oil, garlic and basil (omit the garlic if that is an issue), for dessert, fresh fruit salad doused in a little liquer and cream on the side. HTH

Don't really know much about IBS, but one of my close friends is wheat intollerent and a vegan. Why don't you try some lovely gazpachio for starters, I just leave out the bread and it's lovely on a hot day.

What about a fragrant, chilled melon soup to start, followed by poached or grilled salmon steaks with a light olive oil and lime dressing, some mange tout, baby carrots and new potatoes, with summer pudding for dessert with some bio yoghurt to help digestion?

I don't know anything about IBS Kirsty, sorry. But I do lots of children's parties and they have to be lactose and gluten free. It does make it harder but it's not impossible and I quite enjoy the challenge. There are hundreds of websites that you can use for help ... just google for them. It's fun, trust me! If you make it a chore it will be a chore, if you make it a challenge it will be fun. Good luck and have a great party

Since replying I have searched and this looks like a useful site to start from, Kirsty. Seems that IBS people need to watch their gluten so not much different from what I have to do. Check it out [link]

Kirsty you need to find out which particular things set off your dad and uncles IBS and avoid those. With my mother it is onions, tomatoes and anything green.

Thanks guys, I've looked under various websites and found some fantastic recipes, although I shall be trying Foodieloon's recipes thanks Smile In response to Rosti's question, its things like peppers, carrots, chilli, cheese, and the same as your mother, anything green. This potentially could make the salad idea a little difficult. I will definatley be trying these ideas, will let you know how I get on Smile

Good luck Kirsty, hope all goes well. I think that when some of your party are intolerant then providing a variety of dishes and letting everyone please themself is the best option - rather than a three course meal that one or more of the guests have a problem with. Enjoy!
