I gutted some fish on my wooden butcher's block 3 weeks ago and I can still smell fish. I've scrubbed it with a scourer and Fairy Liquid nearly every day since but the smell is still there. Any ideas?????

I use bleach diluted in warm water and scrub with a nail brush that I keep for the job.

I experienced similar problems some years ago, and this solution has proved priceless.
Why do so many fish recipes include lemon? Because when you've squeezed the lemon over the fish, you can then use the remainder to wipe over your chopping board! Leave for a few minutes without rinsing, then simply wipe off and wash as usual.
Another great tip is never to wash in hot water, as it allows the smell to penetrate further into the material, whether it be wood, composite or, indeed, hands! Fish is lovely to eat, but can be a bit of bother to banish it's smell - hope this helps! Big Grin

Hi there, Try using white vinegar to clean your wooden cutting board. Pour the vinegar straight onto the wood and then use a sponge to literally push the dirt away. Be sure to wipe in the direction of the wood grain, starting at one end and working to the other. This way the dirt you are trying to get rid of won't be pushed back into the wood grain.

Never use bleach on wood, it will kill the natural guard against bateria that wood has. Bicarb is the best idea.

One solution is to not use a wooden board to chop meat or fish on but rather the nylon ones as they can be cleaned under really hot running water and bleached too without causing any damage to them. It is possibly more hygenic to use the nylon ones for this reason.
