Just to say "thankyou" jennifer for sharing your caramel slice recipe with us.I often make this but as I once said it is difficult to get the toffee just right. But your recipe using bought toffee looked easy.So I made some today.Gave the OH a slice with his cup of tea, he said "these are nice" I said "what do you mean?" "well normally I almost break my teeth" was his reply . That is of course a lie but he's nearly right. But I did have to buy 2 packets of toffee's to make your recipe, I ate the first packet.I like toffee and these slices are lovely. Smile

Oh isn't that nice, thankyou for that. It is a very well tried and trusted recipe that I used to do with the children at school. They didn't have time to boil condensed milk or would get the wrong kind..so came up with the easier version. This was the treat end of term lesson..mind you I don't know how it would fit into today's curriculum, where you design everything lol!

Hello Jill, welcome to the site..the more the merrier. Here is the recipe it was on a request for caramel slices a few pages back. I used to call them toffee squares though.
Toffee Squares.
8oz flour
6oz margarine
3oz sugar
1/2 lb creamy toffee
4tablspns milk
1/2lb plain chocolate

Method
1. Make up shortbread, line a square tin ( or Swiss Roll tin, with mix then bake gas 6 electric 175. about20/30 mins or until golden.
2. Melt toffee with milk very gently in a pan. When mixed cover top of the shortbread with the mixture.
3. Cool until toffee is set.
4. Melt chocolate in bowl over pan until liquid then cover the top of the toffee mix.
6. When chocolate is set cut into squares and enjoy.
This is my school recipe, the children used to do half measures in tinfoil tins.. always very popular and a real treat for them.

Wasn't sure if you had seen this Jill, with you being new to the site you may not think to look further back in pages, and for some reason it didn't move up.
By the way you can use any chocolate, I tend to use a good cooking choc now.
