I agree with rday here, celeriac may have a slightly celery-ish taste, but are very different vegetables, and celery isn't a root vegetable.

What I would suggest however is if you can't get the celeriac you could use a pinch of celery salt if you like the flavour of celery.

If you can't get both turnips and swede you will have to just use one or the other, but they do have different flavours and textures, just as for example carrots and parsnips are different again.

Parcels of root vegetables and chicken, does sound nice!

Hi sugarpuff,

I agree with rday, they have a similar taste but are totally different vegetables so I also wouldn't substitute it. I would suggest you use either all 3 if suggested in the recipe or at least the celeriac and the swede as they have the most flavour. Hope it turns out ok.

Celery and celeriac are completly different vegetables, although they do taste similar, so I wouldn't have thought you can substitute one for the other

Thank you Mamma - I prefer celery and so does my hubby - would you suggest I substitute the celeriac for celery?

Yes sugarpuff, but it is the celeriac that will give it the taste.

celeriac does actually taste like a mild form or celery

loads of people say they dont like celery but it makes such a difference to a stock which in turn makes such a difference to a stock

try it.... its great

Thanks guys - it is for Paul Bloxham's Bolsas Caliente which was on this evening - this is just right up my street and want to try it tomorrow evening. Quick, simple and no doubt full of flavour - he uses both swede and turnip and also celeriac. I suppose if I can't get both swede and turnip one or the other will do.

hi sugarfuff

turnip is a white root veg and swede is an orange root veg. Swede is sweeter. However, the Scotts, call a Turnip Swede and so as long as you know which is which you will be fine. All are lovely with a little butter and grated fresh nutmeg.
