I was reading the Somerfiled Magazine and i came across a recipe for chocolate cake, all of the ingredients seemed normal; butter, sugar, cocoa powder etc, but then mayonnaise! Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I've never heard of anything like this before, it sounds a bit weird to me! Chocolate and mayonnaise Eek

Dan, There is a websit I look at a lot which is great for recipes. It is called Recipezaar, I went on this a bit ago and typed in cake with mayonnaise, and lo and behold ,loads of recipes came up. Probably because the Americans are big into Mayo! It is worth a look if you are interested in foods because many of the recipes have "reviews" that are actually quite interesting to read.
Is this Dannyboy or a different poster?

I thought this was a recipe for pregnant women with cravings for mayo. I'll skip it as it sounds a bit weird to me.

Come to think of it I once heard of putting 7up in a cake mix instead of milk. It is suppose to make the cake lighter and fluffier. Well it's better than mayo.

The chocolate cake with mayo recipe has been around for years, and is very nice, think about the ingredients of mayo and what is the problem?

I agree with you but when you think about what we actually use mayonnaise for. I for one would not pour it over my dessert!! Eek

No not to pour over Sarah but to include in the raw mixture before baking.
Mayo is principally eggs and oil so it makes a choccie cake nice and moist.
Try a coca cola chocolate cake also moist and yummy.

I understand what you are saying but mayo has vinegar in it. But everyone has different tastes. I guess Coco cola is sam as 7 up. I heard of 7up being used.

mayo doesnt have vinegar in it unless your buying a rough shop mass produced product. It should be just egg yolks and oilive oil as frexy said before. You can put vinegar in a mayo but thats more of a vinagrette or emulsion style dressing.
ive got a recipe for choc cake with mayo and one with soured cream that jamie oliver uses. both delish Smile

When eggs were scarce during the war[so my mum tells me]they used vinegar instead.
Maurgeret Pattern has a recipe in her "We'll eat again "book, and this is great for people with an allergy to eggs.
