What is the difference between rock and sea salt and why are these both different to ordinary salt? Confused

I know that rock salt is mined inland - in Cheshire for example - and sea salt is obtained from sea water. I always think that sea salt tastes sweeter than ordinary salt - but that may just be me. Smile

to speak coarsly... rock salt is in big lumps, sea salt is in flakes. mined from different sources as outlined above. regular salt is milled before it gets into the packet, into a regular size, and does not usually declare its origin, therefore is of a lower quality. - bit like olive oil. the really good stuff says where it is from. Smile

I personally use Mouldon flakey crystal salt. Great flavour, and great to grind between your fingers over your food! Rock salt i reserved for using in salt grinders.

sherry trifle - I tried lo salt ages ago and hated the taste. Since then I have been using Maldon Sea Salt and find you do not need to use much. If you use herbs and spices for flavour you can cut down on the salt.
