Ginger from the fridge?

I had some fresh ginger in the fridge and noticed that when I went to peel it the flesh was purple. Although the smell was fine and I used it, I was wondering if this is a sign that it has 'passsed it'?
P.S. There were no bad side effects after eating it.

Hi Sonia,

I posted about this just a few weeks ago. I bought some that looked normal on the outside but bluish grey on the inside. It spelt and looked just fine so I posted and was given good advice on here to go ahead and use it. As it was my instinct from the look of it to do so, I did and it tasted just the same. A few weeks on and I'm still around to post, so no ill effects here either.

I also keep fresh ginger in the fridge, but never had it go purple?, just a darker shade of what it is because its been in there too long. My advice is to use fresh ginger within 5 days. Cool

Thanks MammaChef...........I remember someone posting a while back, but didn't remember who it was, and of course didn't recall what the advice was.!!! I ate it too and no side effects, but I wonder what makes it go blue? I have no idea how long fresh ginger keeps as I'm sure it sometimes remains in the supermarkets for ages before being sold. bhavesh - I normally do eat it quite soon after purchasing, but I was away for a few days and put it into the fridge.
Good to know that I wasn't poisoning myself though!!
Thanks again.

Hi bhavesh,

mine was very fresh, really, it was just bluish-grey and so were all the bathches I bought around that period. I know it wasn't caused by not being fresh but good advice though, thank you.
