Hi Suzanne - we always go back to the same place, The Drunken Duck near Ambleside (check out it's website) - the food is fantastic, setting is beautiful, and a great atmosphere in the winter. It has rooms too if you need to stay. We're planning a break soon, and this is likely to be fairly close to top of the list!!

You must go to the 1647 Chocolate House in Kendal. They have two pages of the menu just describing different types of hot chocolate (which you can also order cold) such as chocolate flavoured with violet, ginger, banana, orange, mint... all kinds! I've tried all of them now and I can highly recommend them all. There's also two pages describing all the different chocolate cakes / desserts, which are just to die for. You can of course have tea or coffee and they do savoury lunches as well. The house genuinely dates back to 1647 and has low beams and uneven floors. The waitresses all dress as wenches, in keeping with the atmosphere. It's brilliant, I love it and go there every time I'm back up north. It's usually quite busy though.

Lucy's on a Plate in Ambleside is very good. It also has a deli.

Suzanne
By far the most unusual and one of the best restaurants is L'Enclume in Cartmel. Also try Stampers Restaurant in Ambleside for a night out. Highly recommended by locals for an economical meal of good quality.
