Friday 1st October is World Vegetarian Day and we will be challenging one of our chefs to cook a tasty tempting dish with the nations most hated vegetable. Which vegetable do you hate the most and why? In 2002 the brussels sprout was voted the nations least favourite veg, but it was closely followed by the cabbage - what do you think? The vote is up to you.....

Hi Deborah,

I have to admit that brussels are not a fave of mine, but cabbage on the other hand I quite like. Especially the way that my head chef has shown me. A delicious Black ground peppered cabbage, YUM!

I love cabbage, stir-fried with garlic, ginger and chilli and finished off with a teaspoon of honey. It`s really yummy!

Hi Deborah - I absolutely love sprouts (why are they called Brussels all the time - they weren't when I was growing up! Angry) and cabbage, but one veg I can't stand is slimy okra yuk. Get rid of it I say - and it doesn't resemble any ladies' fingers I've ever seen ! Smile

Brussels are great cooked with Pancetta! even my brother who would rather knit his own intestines than eat brussels is now converted and loves them. My one any only hated vegetable is fennel - nothing would convert me!!

I hate cooked cauliflower. Love it raw, but once cooked, it takes on a whole different taste. And the smell.... Yuk!!

Cabbage is the best! I love it with roast dinner and loads of gravy. The best way to have brussel sprouts is in bubble and squeek. On their own they are quite nasty..

sprouts are a great veg especially with chestnuts at Xmas and I definitely agree about leftovers made into bubble and squeak - the best thing about Boxing Day!
Can't be bothered with artichokes, far too fiddly! Apart from that I love most vegetables. Okra is very slimy unless battered and deep fried very quickly like my local Indian restaurant does them - delicious!

I absolutely hate celery - raw, cooked or otherwise. It just seems to be a useless vegetable that sits in the fridge for weeks because I have to buy a whole bunch of it just to use half a stalk to flavour stock.

Sonia, I know it's cheating but why not just bung in some celery salt instead of using the fresh stuff. You will have more room in your fridge too!!!

the veg at school was the worst - how could they make everything taste the same - ie no taste - I love vegetables now but hated them at school! OH's mother is still the same, she boils the life out of vegetables and complains that mine are too hard - she puts her veg on at the same time as the roast usually!!

Another thing I hate is processed peas. Not exactly a vegetable by the time it arrives on the plate but I am sure that sometime in its early life it started out as something that grew from the soil. I once ordered a steak from a well known chain of pub style restaurants and it was served with .....processed peas...Yuk!!!!

Maybe we should start a thread for recipies to make veg some of us hate, become tasty! I would like to know a recipie where I might like swede. There isn't much food I don't like! Big Grin

There is absolutely NOTHING that anyone can do to a Brussel Sprout that would make my husband eat them. I wonder who was asked about their vegetable likes and dislikes, because I think your tastes change as you get older. We would not have touched Cabbage or Cauliflower when we were little but love them now.Same with asparagus.
My challenge is to make ordinary vegetables more interesting, carrots, sweetcorn, peas etc.,

I adore both brussels and cabbage now, although I didn't always. I can remember being force-fed cabbage when I was child and it should have put me off for life. I think your tastes change as you get older though.

I'm with Sonia....I can't abide celery in any shape or form! Blurgh I think it's a vegetable invented by the devil himself and should be banned from all food shops and recipes. The very sight of it makes my stomach begin to quench and as much as my OH loves it, I just can't even have it in the house, yet alone the 'fridge. Utterly vile stuff.
