Very basic question! (another way of saying a stupid question)
What is the best way to wash waxed lemons/limes before use.

In cold water & wipe them or scrub with a brush ?
or in hot water, wipe or scrub with a brush ?
..or pop them in the washing machine Smile

I can never tell if I've got the wax off or not.

Unwaxed lemons are readily available in most supermarkets, but then again, I dont know where you live.
Therefore, I suggest running them under cold water whilst 'gently', and I mean gently, giving them a little scrub. Wot are you making by the way

I don`t know if I`m doing the right thing but I need to get the wax off apples so I can juice them so I wash them in a mild solution of washing up liquid and then rinse in lots of cold water. They do feel wax free and I`ve been doing it for a couple of years without any ill effects.

I'm not sure the washing-up liquid is a good idea jax47. I think you'll find the wax they use is water soluble anyway, so a gentle wipe with a clean sponge cloth under a running cold tap is probably all that's necessary.

Thanks all, for the info about cleaning wax off lemons/limes..if it is water soluble then the gentle scrub & washing should work for me, I assumed it was like candle wax which is impossible to remove! & thanks Feathers for understanding I may be in an area where I cant get unwaxed lemons (I can actually - but not unwaxed limes) not cooking anything in particular, just use a lot of lemon/lime zest in various recipes, like mousses sweet & savoury, jellies etc.

Washing up liquid is indeed ideal for cleaning the skins of citrus fruit before use.
Just make sure they are also rinsed well.
Alternatively adding some vinegar to the washing water also works.
