Contrary to most peoples memories of school dinners - ours were delicious. Most nostalgic has to be stew and dumplings as it always seemed to rain whenever we had that on the menu. Even now when I make it, I always check to see if it's raining outside!

Mince and tatties always reminds me of school dinners - on the rare occasion I had school dinners it always seemed to be either mince and tatties with the "mash" two blobs on the plate with the ice cream scoop in a sea of mince and gravy!

Rice Pudding and blood clot! It was Rice Pudding with a blob of strawberry jam in the middle which we gererally stirred in to make a glorious pink goo!
Oh the memories. I suppose the Chefs of today would have a strawberry coulis decoratively swirled...with clotted cream rice pudding...

I really loved my schooldinnners in the 60,s and 70's on of the best was the infamous spam fritters and I even liked the liver with mash and mushy peas. I also remember hard boiled eggs with a cheese sauce a really lovely beef pie with really short pastry and a chees flan with a souffle constistency. Favourite puddings were lime mousse and mincemeat tart with icing and a cherry on every portion and who could forget the different custards (white pink and green)

Oooooooh KarenG! - the memories! - that was one of my favourites! Our school used to serve this with marrowfat peas, and a square of ultrashort shortcrust pastry on the side. The way to eat it was to mash the pastry into the mince 'n' gravy, then mix the peas in gently, and scoop up a bit of mash and some of the meat/peas/pastry mix onto each forkful, and eat it all up quick whilst the pastry was still crunchy! I still do this at home, taking great care to get the pastry just right! Then they introduced cheese 'n' biscuits as an alternative 'afters'. It consisted of 4 cream crackers, a small square of butter (and it really WAS butter!), and a 'sensible' sized stick of cheddar. We thought we were soooooo posh! It could take me ages to eat this, just cos I felt like a lady! - the only problem was that the size of the bit of cheese would vary depending on who was cutting it up that day, and what mood they were in! - the worse the mood, the smaller the bit of cheese! And Karen, I too used to love school dinners and would eat everything put in front of me, and then hang around to see if there were any 'seconds'!

Oh yes! cornflake tart with custard. I actually loved spam fritters. All the stuff I never had at home. Corned beef and onion pie and fruit salad with lovely shortcake biscuits. We didn`t get jam with our milk puddings we got rose-hip syrup. I think my favourite was chocolate pudding with pink custard.

Favourite school dinners have asked my collegues and here goes:
Minced meat, mashed pots, greens and gravy followed by chocolate pudding and custard. (1965/66)
Cheese and potato pie followed by coconut and jam sponge with custard (big tins of it that were cut into slabs)
(1965/66)
This is from our youngest member:
pizza, chips and beans (oh dear) (1994/1999) I think he ate the same thing everyday as the que for roast were always too long. Bless
