what can i use instead of gram lentils in a curry recipe,
i can't find any locally

I've heard of gram flour, which is chickpea flour. But not gram lentil.

What are the other ingredients in the curry?

Hi MammaChef and Reshma that was my first reaction too about the gram (Bessan or chickpea) flour.

A few sites seem to suggest that gram lentils are the same as Channa Dhal (or whatever spelling you prefer). I have never come across this before doing a search.

If this is the case I have always understood that a poor substitute for Channa Dhal is Yellow Split Peas. Nowhere near the taste but do will rather than nothing at all.

I have to admint I got it wrong!!

When I first read Muuffin's post the first thing that came to my mind was chickpea flour, and I could not think past that. On the way home it came to me of course there are lentils that are know as gram, did a quick sanity check on my website.

Moong Dal is also known a green gram lentil.
Urad dal is also known as black gram lentil.

If you let me know the ingredients, I'll be able to tell you what you can use instead.

You are right channa dal can be substitued with yellow spilt pea.

it's good to be back, I've done a lot of traveling over the past few months and unfortunately it's back to work. Hope you're keeping well and not working to hard.

Sorry i have not been in touch, but thank you for your replies, the recipe i was hoping to try was from coconut coast, hosted by Reza Mahammad a recipe i got from this website it is called kozhi Nirachathu (stuffed chicken) which uses gram lentils, boiled and drained, hench my problem, i have asked around but shops just tell me they only have gram flour not the same thing.
