I have tried lots of chemists as suggested to buy tartaric/citric acid with no success. Any idea where I can get some?

Have you got any Home Brew shops near you? they would have them as they are used in wine making.

Or it can be bought online, just type Home Brew Shops into Google to find a list.

Annaz, Rustie is right, I just came back from visiting nearly every chemist in town to no avail, but the local health shop, where they sell the brewing kit, stocked tartaric acid - now I'm off to make lemonade!

Hi, try this recipe for a simple lemonade-mother in law gave it to me and it's quite nice. 2 unwaxed lemons,3-4 ozs of sugar, 2pints of boiling water. peel the lemons, squeeze out the juice into a jug, add the peel, pour over the boiling water. refridgerate when cool then when cold strain and serve.
have fun,
Jill

Hi Annaz....

I forgot to say on the show that the reason I put the tartaric acid into the lemonade (and also my elderflower cordial) is as a preservative. This keeps your lemonade for a good 6 weeks........however you and I know that it is so delicious, it would never last that long in the fridge! (I've just made a batch and it has dissapeared!).....SO if you are going to drink the lemonade in the next couple of days, don't bother with the tartaric acid.

Hope this helps.......off to make another batch for my cookery demonstration guests tomorrow..
ps...thanks for the advice on where else to find the tartaric rustie and marion, my chemist has run out and I was trying to think where else I could find it.

The reason I was given that Chemists no longer stock citric acid is that drug users use it to cut their drugs with as it is not harmful.
I get mine from a Wine making shop but even he will only sell me one tub at a time.
Bit daft as if myOH is with me he gets one too.

I had exactly the same reaction with citric acid.....so now I stick to tartaric......got tired of trying to explain myself and what I was doing with the citric acid....once even had to show my arms!!!

I had know idea just how serious they were...

Well my local Sainsbury Pharmacy was still selling it not long ago, but to be honest, if it is all so easily available online, well that is the way I would go.
