On yesterday's programme the man talking about the different varieties of potato said that jersey royal farmers are no longer allowed to fertilise their crop with seaweed like they used to. However, I bought a pack of Jerseys from Sainsburys and as a selling point, on the pack it says "...selected from sloping fields near the sea and fertilised using seaweed from the beaches...". Surely retailers can't state this on produce if it's no longer the case?

Well this is getting confusing, I have heard several times now that the Jersey farmers can no longer use the seaweed, and Martin Levy certainly knows his spuds, but have also found a website with an article dated Feb 2004, therefore affecting this years crop, saying that they do.

I have contacted the website concerned and they have promised to get back to me tomorrow.

Thanks Rustie - it'll be interesting to see the outcome.

Let's put it this way (For Legal reasons this is hearsay, but it was what I was told by a Farmer in Jersey) They are doing what the French have been doing for years, telling Brussels to get stuffed and doing what is natural.

(Like all the european countries are doing as well. This is also what we should be doing.)

here in Jersey we are not part of the EU or the UK but are a "Peculiar" of the Crown and a member of Great Britain. some farmers use "Wraic"-seaweed on their land but many use standard fertilisers. the current "cheap" price is 45p a pound or £1.10 a kilo. Imperial measurements are used here apart from petrol which is in litres and can be bought for 80p a litre.
