Has anybody tried the jars of lazy ginger and lazy garlic - if so are they any good and worth buying?

Personally I don't think they are worth buying. Ginger is cheap to buy and you can bung it straight in to the freezer and grate it when you need it or whizz it in a food processor and pop it in to ice cube trays to freeze. I go through so much garlic and I think there is nothing nicer than crushing/chopping up your own. But, as I say, this is just my opinion! Smile

Hi Porridge,

Personally I find ginger or garlic from a jar doesn’t quite taste the same as fresh. As Georgie said it’s very easy to freeze fresh ginger and garlic, I grate my ginger before freezing it and I peel the garlic cloves then freeze them whole.

and they take up valuable space in the fridge where all the lovely dishes youve made should be living for leftovers the next day.

As an extremely lazy cook, I do use the garlic on a fairly regular basis. I find it's OK for things like marinades and suchlike, but it doesn't cook too well in other sorts of recipes. I tried using it in a stir fry once and it was horrible.

I haven't tried the ginger as any form of ginger gives me heartburn-from-hell. I'm not a great lover of chillies either, but my OH uses the lazy chilli and says it's quite flavoursome.

I only use fresh as I go through so much and it's so easy to get hold of.

the garlic is pretty good, not as good as the real thing, but does stop the smelling hand issue that you usually et from chopping garlic!

I have tried the garlic puree to stop the smelly hand thing - that is quite good, obviously not as good as the real thing but a good fridge ingredient for a substitute if you have no fresh - thanks again for all the advice

I tried the garlic, it is horrible. The ginger is ok but not great. The chillis are better but still not as good as the real thing. If you can, always use fresh, but freezing as Georgie says is very good. For my Indian cookery, I make a paste of ginger and garlic in the food processor and then freeze it.

As ready for use as any jar in the cupboard or the fridge.

If you look on the label of the lazy brands you will see they have a web site, its quite interesting.

MammaChef, is it called the lazy brand or is it the gourmet blend. They also do a garlic paste and a ginger paste.

the ones I was talking about are the lazy brand and the ginger looks like chopped pieces of ginger in a liquid - haven't seen the garlic paste and ginger paste - are they any good?

Thanks blondie yes I was talking about those, EPs. They have a website and as I said, the garlic is horrible. The ginger not so bad and the chilli a little better.

You can find their website on the jar, only I don't have a jar here.

Yes Porridge, they do have a sort of a brine and a slightly bitter taste. I haven't seen a garlic paste, I have seen garlic bits in a sort of brine. Very bitter indeed.

i regulary use the lazy garlic in alot of my cooking and find it a great alternative to fresh and keeps perfectly in the fridge. i also find it has no loss of flavor either.

Haven't used it Porridge so I couldn't say. But I have seen the garlic in use in a supermarket demo. Now when I think back it reminds me of that smoking add with all the fat as it looks similar. I shall stick with my fresh.

You can very easily make your own by peeling a large amount of garlic and ginger when you have some free time, and blending with some veg. oil. You can keep in fridge for upto a month, inside an airtight jar to avoid cross smelling other food in the fridge. The smell and taste remain authentic, unlike the processed artificial, odd smelling product that you buy from the supermarket shelf. I am sorry, there is no way any authentic cook could honestly endorse such product as the lazy garlic and ginger.
