I discovered Alpro soya - it's a cream substitute and is dairy free and lower in fat, it's great in cooking - I use it all the time in curries and pasta sauces - maybe you could try that instead of cream.

Thanks for that idea Porridge, I use soya "milk" so will now look for the cream substitute.

Works really well with Soya "Cream". I have also used half single cream and half milk, semi skimmed or Soya.I also put thinly sliced leeks in between the potato layers, for a change of flavour, with the garlic and salt and pepper as seasoning.. lovely...

Got the soya cream today but am going to try a sauce with it for Cauliflower tonight.

Should help with the old weight watchers points system.

Glad you managed to find it Frexy. It works well with lots of different things, try it with cooked pasta, broccolli and cauliflower and a little grated cheese - it never splits like ordinary single cream and tastes just the same to me. I discovered it when I contracted IBS and had to give up dairy food - it's a godsend as I love creamy sauces!!

Love this site and have learnt so much .
So thank you thank you thank you Porridge for your suggestion of the Soya cream subsitute.

The cauliflower in its cheesey sauce was great and cannot wait to have a bit more experiment.

Found the Alpro in Holland and Barret but only small packs, do you know if it comes in larger ones Porridge?

I love this site too Frexy, it's great to swap ideas and get help from other people.

I buy my alpro from Tescos but it only comes in small packs as far as I have ever found - glad you enjoyed the cauliflower - I am just cooking up a quorn and veg curry which I will add some of the "cream" at the last moment - makes you feel like you are having something fattening when you really aren't!!

Had a look at the Alpro web site and they only do the 250mls so will have to be content with keeping a few in stock.

Have to say as someone who likes ceam but is trying to keep the cals down I was most impressed with its handling and flavour in a sauce, have not tried it just poured over a dessert yet.But doing some plums in port tonight so will see what it is like and report back.

It is in my local Tescos by the longlife milks etc - it's sold in a little carton sort of ribena carton size.

I have tried it last Xmas over my Xmas pudding and it is not as good as double cream or brandy butter etc., but perfectly adequate.

Mmm Frexy - plums in port sound nice - how do you do them?

it would be perfect for that Trudi, I often put it in curries as I love the creamy sauce curries like korma - I put the coconut block stuff in as well though.

Plums in port are nice and easy,Porridge, do them in the slow cooker.
There are some South african plums around at the moment not very tasty raw but when poached in a cup of port mixed with a cup of water become yummy.

When soft remove from liquid taste to see if it needs to be sweetened or even some lemon/orange juice added then reduce to a thick syrup[I do this in my big frying pan nice and quick]
Then serve hot with custard, or warm/ chilled with cream.

Another of your 5 portions of fruit and veg.
