I would like to know which wines are similar in taste to Pinot Grigio and which to try

the OH is an avid daily Pinot Grigio drinker. She wil tell you there is nothing similar. So it really depends on how similar you mean if you forgive my English. You could try Pinot bianco for example but my OH will go yuk!

My friend is flying here for lunch on Tuesday for one pound each way. The price of Pinot Grig locally is 3 euros (obviously can vary). Why not fly out have an Italian lunch pick up some Pinot Grigio and take it home with you?

If you fly into Bergamo they have the Orio centre just over the road. It is the 3rd largest centre in Italy (I am told) and Bergamo old city is an absolute delight with buildings open to the public and free covered in paintings.

Martino is right as usual.
I'm mystified somewhat by the question I'm afraid. Surely since Pinot Grigio is widely available and unlikely to disappear anytime soon, drink that if that's what you like.
Otherwise try Orvieto (secco or abboccato), Vernacchia di san Gimignano, Gavi di Gavi, good old Frascati, ubiquitous Soave and so on......
The thing about Italian wine generally is that it tends to stay within its region of production.
So either take Martino's advice and sample the delights of Bergamo for a small outlay, or visit your nearest branch of Majestic where they hold tasting sessions on Saturday mornings.

I have just discovered a Pinot Grigio blush which is available in threshers - it is to die for and they are currently doing a discount if you buy 6 bottles - which does mean I drink them quicker - but hey!!

I am mainly a red wine drinker but have found a New Zealand white which I buy again and again. It is made by Montana and is called Timara dry white.Safeway sell it but it is cheaper in Sainsburys at £4.29 a bottle.
