The best of British food as chosen by you!

We asked 3,500 foodies from all over the UK to list the uniquely British ingredients that they think have had the most impact on world cuisine.

The results give a unique insight into the tastes of the nation. The much maligned salad cream made the list as did clotted cream, black pudding, English mustard, scones, jellied eels and mint sauce.

The survey also reveals the nation's top five British meals, with sandwiches topping the list, followed by fish and chips and Sunday favourite, the roast dinner. Narrowly missing the top five are the eponymous bangers and mash, Cornish pasty and pork pie.
Worcestershire Sauce

Worcestershire Sauce

This tangy accompaniement to savory foods was rated the number one British contribution to world cuisine. The sauce - aged for at least two months before it is bottled - is a popular addition to cheese on toast, as well as stews, soups, marinades and even salads. Try Bloody Mary Steak with Roasted Vegetables and Poached Ham with Parsley and Worcestershire Sauce.
Cheddar Cheese

Cheddar Cheese

Cheddar is the most popular cheese in the UK, accounting for just over 50% of the country's £1.9 billion annual cheese market. The pale yellow to orange, sharp-tasting cheese dates back to 1170 and was originally made in the village of Cheddar, in Somerset. Try a classic dish like Baked Cauliflower with Mature Cheddar or use it a little more adventurously in Apple, Cider and Cheddar Tart.
Yorkshire Pudding

Fish and Chips

Fish and Chips

Fish and chips in Britain became a cheap food popular among the working classes with the development of fishing in the North Sea in the late 19th century. Chips originated when the fat used for frying the fish often became too hot for good frying. To return the fat to an even temperature, chefs dropped potatoes into the fat. Try our recipe for Fish and Chips Served With Pureed Peas.
Roast Dinner

Roast Dinner

The traditional Sunday roast has been traced back to Yorkshire, England during the Industrial Revolution. It is believed this tradition arose because the meat could be left in the oven to cook before church on a Sunday morning, and it would be ready when the family arrived home at lunchtime. Try our Stuffed Pork Loin with Crackling or if you have less time on your hands a Quick Roast Chicken with Fresh Veggies.
