Candied Peel! I can't stand the stuff, never use it. I love the spices that flavour Christmas cakes, stollen and mince pies but all is ruined when peel is added. I like fresh peel and even the bits in marmalade but Candied Peel is disgusting. We just get Christmas over and Lo and Behold it's hidden in Hot X buns.
Merry Christmas to all.

Bashir, thanks, I gather that many sweets contain gelatin of dubious origin so they are a no no for decoration. I always use organic free range eggs so they should be ok. I hadn't realised until today that pork products are often used in margarine! it's certainly a much healthier diet

Hi, I used to live at JHQ Rheindahlen and found that the Hive and Salmond House had a list of foods translated into English."Housewives shopping list"I think. Even then some were not available but shops in Holland always had the ones we are used to in the UK. NATEX stores had lots too.

I do hope Richard will continue to present the show whenever Jeni is away. His smile has rescued and triumphed maintaining the interest in the content of the always enjoyable programs.

Oh what Venom! Can they keep going at the same pace? You are absolutely right MarcJ about Sophie G's constant butting in and infact blatant rudeness, although at times to-day she did seem to bite her tongue. Many of the guests are obviously embarrased. Were there comments a while ago about Jenny rarely presenting with Sophie G? Richard has learnt an awful lot about food in the short time he has been presenting GFL and should be respected for this but some of his comments were not for little children!

Well done Richard. Sophie is a fabulous cook and excellent live but she was her frequently difficult self to-day. She was obviously trying to score points over Richard but the boy done well! There are fascinating shows ahead. Keep going Richard.

Roll Eyes I do wish Richard would stop waving his fork around as he talks. his mother oviously failed to stop that unpleasant habit, it is now up to UKTV Food to remind him of basic good manners. He is fine in small doses and good as a reviewer on GMTV.

As Christmas is gradually raising it's head what about an item on cake decorating, and plain or sponge cakes? My family won't eat the traditional fruit cakes. I saw Christmas cards for sale last week!

Hi, perhaps you could try your nearest co-op home ware store, i know ours sells them, if not an old fashioned hard ware shop or even B&Q.

Hi, try this recipe for a simple lemonade-mother in law gave it to me and it's quite nice. 2 unwaxed lemons,3-4 ozs of sugar, 2pints of boiling water. peel the lemons, squeeze out the juice into a jug, add the peel, pour over the boiling water. refridgerate when cool then when cold strain and serve.
have fun,
Jill

Hi Jenny, a question for Michel,
i have heard that a restuarant is as good as its' creme brulee, what are the things to look for? one of the top restuarants on the island(Jersey) cooks a creme brulee with a delicate bruleed top but with an almost cake like texture underneath.
your 2 live shows are so full of interesting items everyday it must be amazing hard work for all.

Hi Jenny,
Will wines from Jersey Be featured? we have a very good vineyard here, La Mare which makes wine, we had champagne style for Xmas and many local specialites such as Black Butter and Fudge.

then for Slim Jim
I have 4 cats, ranging from 11years to 18months and from 3kgs to 7. the youngest being the heaviest and the only ex male large but not fat, the othes are ex girls. the 11 years old eats the most and weighs 4 kgs. and is the only Siamese. the others are Bengals, so as with humans weight seems to be genetic make up and the individual.. they all eat sachet cat food, the bengs are all closely related. the native cat here is known as the Jesey Plump and makes most cats look slim. 9kgs is not unusual.

Hi Fossils,
i had a Panasonic breadmaker as an Xmas present and haven't ought a loaf since. The bread is very good, we have found that the mixes are not worth buying. The dough for pizzas is good, our 15 yrs old son who is ultra critical said it is the best pizza dough ever. We use Homepride breadmachine flour for everyday loaves, brown and white. Dove's organic is beautiful as is Hovis granary, usually 50:50 with white or brown. Have tried Spelt flour for a more unusual loaf, also good. Have bought a French bread tin to put the French dough in to cook; I try Paul Hollywoods' recipes and have also made Indian breads, nut breads with excellent results and loaves that you would readily buy. The 2 hour program cuts out a rise and is not so good, just OK for emergencies. I also have a Philipps Ice-cream maker, good for sorbets too.
Both are fun to experiment with.

here in Jersey we are not part of the EU or the UK but are a "Peculiar" of the Crown and a member of Great Britain. some farmers use "Wraic"-seaweed on their land but many use standard fertilisers. the current "cheap" price is 45p a pound or £1.10 a kilo. Imperial measurements are used here apart from petrol which is in litres and can be bought for 80p a litre.
