I found Nick Nairn's advice on pans to be a bit out of whack for the average wage earner, frankly. There's a lot better value with other options.

You've hit the nail on the head droach about MF and commentary on the food in general. EVERYONE waxes eloquent about EVERY dish EVER made on the show. How could this possibly be?

At least on GFL we could look at Jeni's face and see which concoctions were dogs and which ones were worth trying.

I'd love to see MF stop hosting and be on the show as an objective critic of the dishes but I guess your right, the chefs wouldn't hear of it.

I'm not a fan of Paul Heathcote but I found it sickening that Matthew Fort, who I don't mind was constantly sucking-up to him.
They kept calling him Michelin Starred Paul Heathcote, I don't think he has one now.
Matthew probably didn't hear because he was clamped up his bum. Blurgh

I visited the Market Kitchen set about a month ago when Theo Randall & Darina Allen were cooking - it's good fun in general & interesting to watch them & try the food but to be honest I was a little disappointed.... (maybe I expected too much?) ....

Darina's dessert was hopelessly too sweet & her arm beef salad was really not that great - extremely underseasoned, the meat a bit overcooked, & "horseradish" sauce tasting more of egg than horseradish! I was approached to give feedback on the dish but declined cause there was no way I could wax lyrical with a straight face on camera (though it was no problem for others to do)

Great insight, thank you Haaitlie. Obviously this would be the case, but there is never any criticism or constructive comment on anything so why even bother with "taste testing" if we know everyone is just going to say how "wonderful" everything is?? It's all so silly, really.

I've seen a couple examples where they've cut into almost-raw chicken and still described it as if the dish was a gift from the gods.

Well, at least now e know...

I was just about to start a thread on "Get Real" regarding the sickening back slapping, "positive" comments by everyone in that MK studio on every single dish....what the*****....Get Real Pls!!!

I'd like to get a chance to be in that audience so I can really give my own unbiased opinion on those foods because frankly some just look Blurgh esp those cooks/chefs who hardly put any seasonings!

Well, I don;t know if I'd try many of MF's attempts at cooking. So many of his dishes look very unappetising and THEN, voila, the audience just goes ga-ga for the dish. Give me a break. Tedious over-production. The tastings are simply a waste of time because we know they are phoney.

Thanks Haaitjie for your candid desciption of your experience!!

Agree 200% with Babsky but as it's recorded I don't think unbiased opinions would get past the Butchers Block.
I know that some of the dishes would be a no no for me as I hate one or more of the ingredients. The food could be first class but if I tasted it, I would give it a big time yuk but that's just as a personal taste eg. There is nothing on this earth that could make me like Spinach or "Dark" Cabbage. The latter would probally make me Blurgh.
So it must be selectively televising the positive answers because there is no way everybody likes everything.
Come on MK, let's have a weekly spot of out takes. Develish

What a great idea Barsh! I love blooper shows of almost any kind and MK out-takes would bring a chuckle, I'm very sure. After all, every dish can't be great can it? I'm sure smoke has come out of that leittle oven more than once!

I do note that even through all of MF's TV shows I don't recall him ever critiquing a professional chef. It's always been amateurs or other indirect criticism.

I don't think it realistic (from a professional sense) to see him blast some well-known food persona on the show. Leave that to the newspapers I think.

Re-runs of Rhode Over India must appeal then?
Inher Garden or whatever her name is chucks stuff in the sink only for the waste disposal to be in reverse.
Top left off the liquidiser.
Etc. etc.
It must have happened.
I remember that on one of St. Deliah's series they showed a couple of out takes and the end of each programme.

I remember an episode when Rachel Allen cut into a cake and you could clearly see raw, dry flour spill out as she uttered the immortal phrase "Oh It worked"!
Needless to say I will be refusing any invitations to take tea with lovely Rachel if that is her definition of success.
Sadly I don't recall any diner feedback in that episode but you did see an ambulance arrive at the end of the show, possibly to ferry some cake lover to the local A&E to have their stomach pumped.

What a hilarious story meso, I'm sorry I missed that episode. It does bring back a lamb rack dish that MF made. He diligently seared the fat layer saying it was necessary to render the aft and put it in the oven at 220 degrees for 20 minutes. That seemed very quick to me - but he's the chef.

They were going to have a taste test but, well, when the rack came out of the oven he cut them for chops and the fat was as white and thick as ever and the lamb was blood red. Eeeuw.

His comment: "perfect!"

Oddly, they seemed to skip the taste test segment of the show that day!

I think we've all missed the point here.
The aim of the chefs is to give YOU an idea to cook at home, NOT produce one in the studio, although fine if it works.
You see the first recipe made and then after the break it has multiplied forty-fold to feed the audience, which is a very biblical trick. Some of it looks like poop before the ads but it ain't what they use to feed the punters.
As for members of the audience who don't like what's offered it's different strokes for different folks.
Ya can't please 'em all, as this forum proves Develish

I know what you're saying chippy, but with all the film editing and refilming that has been reported here it would seem they could create a better production. As you say, the audience is eating SOMETHING. Why don't they just show that food as it obviously worked. It's not a live show, after all.

Well they have certainly picked a live wire with new presenter Amanda Lamb, haven't they!? She adds a certain childishness to the programme doesn't she?

Is she permanent or just in the crop going through the revolving door?

The mind boggles as to just how the casting couch works! Eek

Silvana Difranco and Amanda Lamb have been a real breath of fresh air. MK has been fun to watch!

Glad to hear Tanya Ramsey has been given the boot. I'm sure she's personable enough in real life, but a TV presenter she ain't!

Now the only third wheel is Tom Parker Bowles, but PLEASE don't get rid of him too - his constant eye rolling and butting in with Matthew Fort is hilarious! These two are the classic odd couple - Come on, spill, are they at each other's throats during the ad breaks!! Big Grin Big Grin

It's good to see the female branch of humanity get a crack at presenting. That was one of the reasons Great Food Live worked so well.

With all the male chefs coming on the show you need some sort of strong presonality female counter-balance otherwise there is simply too much testosterone and the show becomes boring.

Tana didn't help the mix for some reason, but certainly Amanda Lamb does! Who dresses her? They have a keen eye for what the viewers turn tV on for!

And Silvana is a great talent, too.

was never impressed by the presenters on market kitchen. Mr Fort is boring, and we all know why tom PB is there (who's his mum?) so how refreshing to see the tebbut/lamb combo. Amanda Lamb is brill. So much character, lovely humour. She just makes me smile the moment she appears, and the interaction with matt tebbut was excellent. Is this the result of taking on a professional for her TV presentation skills as opposed to a foodie first and telly presenter second? probably, and it works. Smile

Frown What? Amanda Lamb is great at presenting 'A place in the Sun', but absolutely dreadful on market kitchen. It wouldn't have been so bad if she stuck to presenting, but she is hardly qualified to prepare a dish. She made me squirm. Sorry
