I for one am sick and tired of hearing the moaning going on about Market Kitchen.
I for one will be sticking with it and will support what UKTV are trying to do here.
While i loved GFL, i also recognised that the format was getting tired and copied.
So SIGN here and support Market Kitchen.
Agreed, so fed up with all the negative feedback and moaning.
GFL is gone.
As I have posted elsewhere, I don't see Market Kitchen as being a replacement for GFL, not the same air time or slot. It is a new program brought in at the time GFL finished.
Forget all the comparisons and view it as a new show. Give it a chance.
And let's get back to talking about FOOD and stop whinging!
I agree
All these people who have said I'm never watching it again seems to have watched the entire weeks worth - if you think it's rubbish don't watch it , if you like it do, but please stop all this immature rantings of bring back Jenny etc she might have been a good presenter but she knew diddly squat about food
Move on, look forward and don't dwell in the past - I, for one, will be watching Market Kitchen again and again
Well good for you, if you like it so much watch it. I only came to UKTV Food because of GFL, I was looking for something to watch at 6:00 and found it about a year ago. OK it's gone, I miss it and Jeni, but I have some respect for other people's opinions. However I am genuinely puzzled as to how anyone can watch MK without having to turn it over after 10 minutes. I tried 2 nights running for 10 mins max and doubt I'll watch it again, I found it just plain boring and extremely embarassing to watch. I'm not being facetious but can you HONESTLY tell me (and others) what you like about it? Don't compare it to GFL, just say why you like it?
MK is using fresh seasonal ingredients ( remember not all people are experienced cooks ) and whether it be cooked by Tana or Sarge you can take your pick of how you would like to try the dish
Matt's fennel & blood orange salad the other day was lovely and so simple to do, so sometimes it's just the initial ideas that are good and teach novices the basics
I would say you need to give it a chance and for MK to find it's feet - also it's great to see some new faces instead of the likes of Brian Turner etc etc
If Market Kitchen encourages anybody in this country to go to food markets or talk to their butchers etc it will be fantastic! Jeni is, was and will always be a great presenter, but this programme is trying to encourage the public to MARKETS!!!!
If Market Kitchen is trying to encourage the public to use markets, why is it sponsored by a supermarket?
Just to say quickly. I do understand where you are coming from completely. However, without comparing Market Kitchen to GFL, I can honestly say that I just don't like the programme. Personally, the format doesn't work for me and it's not the sort of show that I enjoy. However, each to their own. For some people, like yourselves, MK is excellent, but to others it isn't. I'm sure there are people here that hated GFL whilst other people loved it. I think the reason people are comparing it to GFL (and I think I may have been guilty of this) is because GFL finished and MK started pretty much straight after, so it's easy to just view it as a replacement. I don't really know if I am making much sense here. As I've said, I was sad to see GFL go, but I gave the new show a chance, viewing it as a new show, however, I just don't like it. Nothing to do with comparing it to GFL at all. There we go.
'fraid I disagree with Paul and Paddy. MK could be better if the main host was not a food expert, but a really talented presenter. Perhaps a non-foody would ask more relavent questions and listen carefully to the answers. For example have you watched "something for the weekend"? Tim lovejoy (football fan) and Simon Rimmer are excellent.
If there has to be so much audience paticipation, then they need to be auditioned first and not filmed while they are looking bored and reading magazines. A good presenter would put them at ease.
I think there is a place for Tana, (although it may just be a small slot) it is interesting to have the opinion of someone who cooks for the family, not just top chefs. I would also like nutritionists and home economists on the show to challange the chefs when the recipies are loaded with salt and sat fat!
Although there are a FEW people who do like Market Kitchen, the majority dont so what is your answer to that?
liz0 you make good points.
As much as I don't like the show, I do think it could be made into quite a good programme with a some alterations. The presenters need to get into it a bit more, in my opinion as at the moment they just seem to be presenting without really getting it, if you know what I mean? Also, I think the sections in the shows themselves could be a bit longer. I find the debate bits they do quite interesting but a bit too short so more time spent on that would be good. It does seema bit choppy and randomly put together. The same goes with the masterclasses. Maybe it will get better in a few weeks though, I don't know. I've given it a chance and I'll continue to do so despite me not liking it, but Im afraid that after a couple of weeks if it hasn't changed I won't be watching much longer.
Mum 34, the simple answer to that is those who have strong opinions and have a grievance to air shout loudest.
For all we know there could be 10,000's of people happy with the show but because they do not have a strong opinion either way, they certainly won't come on a message board to say so.
At this moment in time there are alot of agrieved people due to the loss of GFL and they are hitting out. I am sure UKTV factored for this as it was a popular show.
People initially will close their minds to new concepts as it is change. People can be very guarded to change and will hit out at it.
At this moment in time alot of people are taking it out on Market Kitchen as it is seen as the baddy that replaced GFL.
Ok I take the point about not comparing the MK with GFL, but they aren't doing well really yet are they. Watching 3 people cutting up pineapples, or a selection of vegetables, is not what I would call entertaining television, reminds me of The Generation Game! I would like to see more of the Market Stalls and the produce, recipes from them maybe.
I am finding it all a bit hectic at present, I think they need to relax more and take it slower. It is fairly difficult to understand some of the conversations bearing in mind there are no subtitles.
Haven't watched MK since last time I posted which was a week or so ago. I have been looking at the message board though and it's obvious from what I am reading that things are not getting better! I'm curious, where are the people who told the majority of posters to stop whining? Surely this is your forum to build up the new flagship show that was to replace the tired, been there done that GFL. And in response to the comment that those who have grievencies shout the loudest, you're not telling me that if there were viewers that felt strongly that MK was any good they would not post on this thread to defend the programme! It's a bit lonely in here I guess, can you hear the echo...echo....echo....
Well Jenni may or may not know a great deal about food but what she did do was ask the kind of question that I in my ignorance might have and so I learned something from GFL. I find MK irritating, the constant swinging camera angles and the seemingly hurried pace of all the features. I watched on wednesday while an expert was asked questions about --well I can't remember as I was more interested in what the person who'd asked the question was ordering from the waitress ,and last night my husband and I were taking bets on how often the chef cooking the chicken salad would mention Tom PB name--I won.
I can't watch it again, so I won't.
goodness, i should stay in more. I've just realised that market kitchen has replaced good food live. sorry to be a jonny come lately to this debate. I feel so sorry for jenny and of course Andrew Nutter. His family pizza (2001) was truly special.
how do we find previous postings. It seems entries just disappear into the ether. I suggetsed an improvement to Market Kitchen but now cannot find it.
regards
jacktar
Paul I feel as though you are making sweeping generalisations about people not wanting this show because they see it as a replacement for GFL. I'm not watching because the concept of the show did not interest me at all and I have better things to do with my time when it's on.
The ones who are making negative comments are the ones shouting the loudest
This is online Paul, everyone who wants to has the same opportunity to express their opinion because the loudest voices cannot shout over and drown out the quietest! A lot of people appear to be coming on, some for the first time, because they want to express the fact that they do not like this new show. I have read what you have said in this thread and another about knowing what they are trying to do with this programme and feel that those comments are quite patronising to the people who do not have a positive opinion of this show.
Mo
Leaving aside the GFL aspect to this debate Market Kitchen is dire. My reasons
1-No chemistry between the presenters and since it's a magazine program the presenters are key to it.
2-I know how to home cook. What I want to see is somethng that takes that to the next level. In the last 2 weeks I have seen the blandest looking fish pie outside a frozen cardboard box and cottage pie with chilli where the only change I can see in the recipe is several chopped chillis-not really cutting edge stuff
3They're in a market but where are the stalls. Where's the education of walking around the stalls, talking to the stall holders and actually showing people what is in season and how you check things like quality and ripenes. I would like to see them (actually this is a lie because I stopped watching it a all at some point in the last week) but I would have liked to have seen something where somebody in the audience gets to leave with a fiver and come back with something for them to cook.
4Borough Market? I'm sure Borough Market is all very well and the metropolitan elite go on about it enough but for me setting it in Borough Market suggests this programs target audience are the middle class food mafia who think that if they dare to come within 20 ft of a non organic courgette then they will suffer anaphylactic shock-the sponsorship by Waitrose backs this up (nothing against Waitrose btw as I think of the supermarkets it's food quality is the best).
All in all the different parts of this program hve been done far better in other programs that don't take up an hour of primetime
Hi Adrian3,
I agree with your criticism of the current format and I now think that it is up to the programme planners to summarise the feedback and tell us how they plan to improve the show - for indeed, many improvements are sorely needed. However, I do think that while people complain bitterly about MK they really ought to suggest how they think it can be improved. As I have previously said on another site (is this yet another?) reaching the target audience is crucial. I already know how to bone out a guinea fowl and stuff a seabass with lemongrass so I don't want valuable prime time taken up with how to cut a pineapple, which according to my Thai wife, Stuart Gilles got it completely wrong. You may have read my earlier suggestions regarding the setting up of an advanced cooking seminar run by professional instructors from trade recognised colleges. Shouldn't the programme directors appoint a site moderator to respond to our suggestions and why haven't they? Despite all the comments, either negative or positively put, what if anything happens to the information and views expressed - is the stuff actually read or does it simply disappear in circuituous discussions between disgruntled viewers?
Adrian your comment
""setting it in Borough Market suggests this programs target audience are the middle class food mafia who think that if they dare to come within 20 ft of a non organic courgette then they will suffer anaphylactic shock"
really made me laugh.
and although I like organic, wouldn't call myself mafia, just someone who USED to have migraines caused by chemicals in the food, which I don't have anymore because I don't eat the chemicals. Still laughing though - it does make organic lovers sound whimpy
I take it Borough Market is all organic then. Wish is was near me.
Why on earth would we want to support such a hypocritical programme?
The title is Market Kitchen - it is supposedly set around Borough Market - yet it's sponsored by a supermarket. The competition prize is £100 to spend in Waitrose - which is of very little use to anyone in Scotland (except Edinburgh), a large part of Wales and all of Northern Ireland. - and why is a supermarket sponsoring a MARKET programme?
I would have expected the programme to visit markets (around the country would have been a good idea), find out what seasonal produce was on sale- as it can vary in different regions -and show recipes using this. They could have showcased local producers too.
These 'cook offs' between chefs and presenters serve no purpose- it's not as if they're using the market produce in the recipes.
The whole thing could be so much better - it's badly thought out and very badly presented. A great disappointment all round.
There really isn't much to support here as yet.
So many different posters are saying so.
Why on earth would I support something that I don't think is good?
I would support it in a second if I enjoyed watching it.
