When Were We Funniest?

Brent, Bremner, Pollard, Partridge. Our current decade already has a wealth of wit. But is current comedy really better than ever?

Any decade that has Little Britain has got to be the best dcade. Argument over.

Please stop citing Little Britain or Catherine Tate as classic comedy! They are exactly like The Fast Show or Harry Enfield & Chums and consequently will not be funny in about five years time. In fact TFS and HE&C had a wider variety of characters and catchphrases so probably looking back lasted longer. Unfortunately where once I could belly laugh when watching the sketches don't even raise a smile. Our great comic heritage lies in the sit com, which we do much much better than the Americans. Sadly the rise of the repetitive catchphrase sketch show has all but killed the sit-com over here. Nothing new happening. The last sitcom of any worth was extras, which is Gervais doing Brent, doing People Like Us, which is born out of a sketch on Victoria Wood on TV. I still laugh, even though on UKTV Gold I've seen then all about 15 times, at Porridge, Open All Hours, Steptoe, Likely Lads, Dinnerladies, Fawlty Towers, Partridge, Blackadder and of course Only Fools And Horses. More recently Blackbooks and Father Ted were huge. Please bring back the sitcom!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not anti-american either, Scrubs is brilliant and I like Frazier and Seinfeld!!!!! Forget David Walliams and Matt Lucas - Ronnies Corbett and Barker, Ernie Wise and Eric Morecambe are true class!

I could not agree more with the previous post. Even though a lot of the comedy's of the 70's were made before I was born or before I would have been old enough to watch them, I just love to see them on UKTV Gold.
The BBC certainly do a better job of the Sitcom, with more recent examples being My Hero, My Family, The Green Green Grass, The Vicar of Dibley to name but a few.
Isn't it time that UKTV dedicated a channel to comedy like they do with Drama (even though this semms to have alot of comedy on it too), Documentary, Style, Gardens, etc..
The British have made some of the best comedy out there and I love watching it.

Hasn't anyone noticed how this supposed Vote for when we were funniest has only included BBC program's. Where is Peter Kay's Pheonix Nights or Max and Paddy's Road to no where. It's totally paid for by the BBC. what a waste of time. Why was no mention ever made to programs from other networks on what is supposed to be a commercial independent channel.

The previous post is absolutely right. Is when were funniest based on what's showing on UKTV Gold? Pheonix Nights is absolutely in the same frame as Porridge or others of the classic comedies, making me laugh even though I have watched the series numerous times. Though Max & Paddy was more like Going Straight (Porridge Afterthought). I missed the 70's so I'm not even sure if Rising Damp is in there.

Naughties just about sums up the standard of comedy these days. Generally disgraceful stuff, not clever humour at all really - its just pushing the limits to raise a laugh through shock-value. Scraping the bottom of the barrel.
I don't think any of the so-called comedy shows are really worthy of the name, with the possible exception of Last of the Summer Wine. If you want to find real humour, you've got to look away from the comedy programmes and delve into something like Top Gear or Doctor Who. Even News24 has more laughs in it some days.

even when the 00's is great programming the presenter does not choose it.
